I dunno about old.. I like to refference my old ranger for this one. While it is an 07, its got a few old things in it that I like. For example :
3.0L "Vulcan" V6 that first rolled out in 1986 and was somewhat unchanged through the years.
5 speed Mazda m5od, designed in 1988
Ford 8.8" axle...
Personally, I preffer rope over cable. If it breaks its less deadly and i hate, hate, HATE metal slivers.
But what your saying is true, steel is stronger in high abrasive enviroments. IE, sharp angles, rocks.
HMMVW isnt bad, but they are very good at what they do. When we started looking into them to replace the ILTIS jeep with them the problem we had was Width. These things are wise, wide enough to survive tank tracks. Which is part of thier design I hear. But the problem lies in the width, its too...
I use the garmin etrex touch 25.. Relatively cheap, runs on a pair of AA's, waterpoof. Works. Can be updated. Actually has some sports modes in it and there are bicycle mounts for it. Never used it on a bicicle myself but.

Air brakes.
They go Psshht.
In all seriousness, part of my trade is teaching people how to drive everything from offroad vehicles, to fighting vehicles, tractor-trailers and everything in between. Dangerous goods, accident investigation, anti-terrorist tactical driving, etc. Airbrakes is...
07 Ford ranger scab - 4.10, 5 speed, 3.0l Vulcan. Best I've gotten so far was 22mpg, almost all highway.
Which for the ranger is spot on what they say it should. Not great, but good enough.
Maybe a suburban or expedition, depending on the size of the dogs of course. I mean you could get a huge top basket for it, put all your gear up there and have the back for the doggos, and room for 5 easily. A used one would be pretty cheap given the cost of gas.
Probably too late to the party to put my opinion in on the whole shebang, but here it is anyway, coming from a ford guy and current old ranger owner. Keep in mind this is based on what's availible in Canada right now so far as trim levels.
The new ranger is a good platform, and has proven its...
