    GPS/Tablet

My trusty 7" Lenovo has finally died, so I'm looking for another Android tablet with cell connectivity. Finding something that will fit the dash of a TJ without filling the entire windshield is the challenge, 7" Android tablets with cell service are kind of hard to find. This vehicle is going...

    Chevrolet Colorado

My rig is getting a little long in the tooth and I'm pretty set on a midsize truck as a replacement. I'm doing a lot more towing and hauling these days with track riding, and the Xterra has to be packed very specifically to get everything in. The Colorado is on my list, but with the current...

Late November near St. George, Utah

I've always focused on other parts of the state, but I'm wanting to get out in late November somewhere a little less snowy. Does anyone have any recommendations in the St. George area of Utah (and into Arizona)?

UT Resources for less travelled places

If you want to see as few people as possible, get a backcountry permit for The Maze District in Canyonlands. I specifically recommend Maze Overlook and The Neck campsites.

What is the Quintessential Camp Food?

Here is my basic recipe that I can't do without when camping, I can get by with bagged breakfasts and dehydrated dinner and I won't complain - but this is a staple. Campfire - first get that nice slow, hot fire going with a good bed of coals and some larger logs that will burn for a while. Be...

Wanted Mountain States: M416 Project Trailer

I've been checking on KSL, but haven't seen much. I think I saw one, but it was closer to "scrap heap" than "project".

Wanted Mountain States: M416 Project Trailer

I'm in Salt Lake City, UT and am keeping an eye out for an M416 project trailer. Unfortunately, I'm not able to buy a completed project right now, so I'm going to be putting in the elbow grease. If anyone spots an M416 for sale that isn't a pile of rust held together with paint, please let...

    Bottle Jacks

I saw that, but all of those jacks are simple hydraulic systems that have to be quite bulky to get the height I need - and that doesn't address the challenge of getting a large jack under a vehicle with a flat on uneven ground. I have a HF jack that I thought would be sufficient and ended up...

    Bottle Jacks

I've tried a couple different hydraulic bottle jacks and I'm disappointed in their performance. They have to be stored upright, the seals tend to go bad over time, and all the one's I've bought have very limited lifting heights. Any that have enough lift are often too tall to fit under the...

    Alloys or steel rims

I've run both steel and alloy over the years. Steel will hold air and can sort-of be repaired/bodged in the field, but it's very heavy and the worst kind of weight: unsprung rotating mass. I have managed to bend several steel wheels over the years on fairly mild trails, as a result, I believe...

Thank you for the JB weld. Afton canyon water crossing

Change your diff, transfer case, and transmission fluid ASAP. You should probably do an oil change too. Water contamination in those components can cause problems.

    Loud vehicles?

Both my motorcycles have aftermarket exhaust (bought second hand, so I didn't have much choice), but I love the sound of my bikes. I think it has to do with context and figuring out our "why". Why are we out here? Some people are out here to throw big rooster tails and listen to their V8...

    Loud vehicles?

I prefer vehicles to be as quiet as possible. I don't want to disturb others and I like being able to sneak up on wildlife to get photos. I go out to the wilderness to get away from traffic noise, not to bring it with me or listen to other people's loud or broken exhaust.

    Is this one of us?

Well said. Whenever I go out in the desert, even for a day trip, I bring more fuel, food, and water than I think I will need - partially in case I get stuck, but more often than not, to rescue people who are not prepared. I saw it happen in Moab all the time with cyclists who burn through...

    Is this one of us?

If anyone has a ham ticket, be sure you pre-load your phone/tablet with RepeaterBook or take down all the repeaters in the area. This thread at Tacoma World has some good information on repeater stations in the area. It is really worth it to get your ham licence and a good car-mounted unit if...

    Puncture Repair Kits

What is everyone using for puncture repair kits? I have a cheap no-name kit that I'd like to upgrade to a better one that has stronger tools. ARB makes one that I know some people use, but I'm curious if there are better or better-for-the-money (and space) kits out there. ARB tends to bank...
