    2020 Outback Build

Welcome to the Subaru world :) I have a 2016 Outback with a 2" lift and the Geolander tires. It's been fine with no problems for a 2 summers of mountain exploration a this last year of tame, close-to-home travel. I don't do many technical trails so mainly softroading with a few challenging ones...

    Wisconsin Adventure Trail Primitive Camping

I haven't done this yet. I'm thinking of trying it at the start of June this year. There is a group called Illinois Overlanders. They recently went exploring that way and wrote a report about it on their website (link below). They have a bunch of info but they are also willing to give advice...

Foldable Solar Panel Setup for your Overland Rig

It's a good setup! I have a 100w panel on a long cable that I put in the sun when I hit camp. My trailer stays in the shade and is cooler while the battery charges. It's worked great unless I get a string of rainy overcast days. My panel doesn't fold but it fits on the bed in my teardrop. I...

US Northwest June 2020 WABDR - Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

Thanks for all the possitivity. This is a wonderful community! The trailer is a trailex aluminum one and it has small wheels (12"). I've been trying to switch it out to axle-less (Timbren type) but the frame isn't set up for it according to Trailex and other mechanics I've talked to. It's deeper...

US Northwest June 2020 WABDR - Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

This is how I've expanded my adventuring last summer. I set up base camps in WY and SD and got myself into some fun spots. I ended up in one place where everyone else had those atv 4-wheelers. The trailer and gear only weigh about 5-600 pounds so it's pretty light. It definitely feels different...

US Northwest June 2020 WABDR - Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

Much appreciated! I’ve been saving potential hikes in that area on all trails and hope to get in a few weeks of exploration before moving on to the coast. I’ll get to that WABDR one of these days.

US Northwest June 2020 WABDR - Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

Thanks for the advice. I just watched the video series that Greg suggested. Then I found another one where Subarus did the route last year. There were some deep ruts that would make me nervous. The Subarus did just fine by being careful but they weren't pulling a trailer with less clearance. I...

US Northwest June 2020 WABDR - Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

Thanks for the video series. I didn't come across that one. I watched some other videos/read some blogs and found similar views about the route. The trailer is so light that it hasn't been a problem on past trips. I know the car will do just fine. I'm thinking I could just bypass something if...

US Northwest June 2020 WABDR - Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

Hello all, I have been trying to make it out to Washington (I live in Illinois) for the past couple years but keep getting sidetracked into other areas of exploration (a bit of the TAT, bighorns, black hills, medicine bow...). I was planning to drive straight out there this summer to avoid the...

Route/hike ideas? Minnesota through South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho and maybe Oregon

We have 2 months to adventure! I have a few weeks in Minnesota planned but then we're going west in search of mountains and dog-friendly hiking. I'm new to overlanding but not new to camping/hiking/backpacking. My Subaru Outback is capable but the limiting factor is my teardrop camper. It's on...

Restocking groceries when out with your dog

I try to stop at the store early in the day when it’s cooler. So far no trouble with upset passerby’s. My dog just sleeps unless another dog is near. A/c cooling the car beforehand is good too.

Running trails with a vehicle vs. hiking them

I’ve crossed the country a couple times on my bicycle, switched over to backpacking and now use the vehicle to get to day hiking spots. Traveling with my dog brought about some of the change but more so an aging body. Overlanding is a good way to adventure into more remote locations and then...

Our Teardrop Camper build - Dakota's Doghouse

Technically, I finished to this point last year but it's still a work in progress :) We spent last summer camping in it throughout various national forests. My dog, Dakota, loves it so we call the teardrop Dakota's Doghouse. Watch a video of the build highlights here: Building Dakota's...

    Subaru Owners Registry

There are so many inspiring builds here! I thought I would post where I am now. These are from last summer so they show my 2016 Outback pulling the teardrop camper I built. Now the Outback is updated with a ADF lift (2" front, 2 3/8" rear), Primitive skid plate, 235/60r18 Yokohama Geolander...

US Midwest Ohio Valley Overland's Trans Hoosier Overland Route (T.H.O.R.)

I'm interested in this trip too. I am new to off-road and would like to travel/learn with a group. I have a question about the route. I tow a teardrop camper that is not set up yet for too much off-road. It's on 12" wheels that will be one of my future changes. My vehicle can handle much more. I...

Hello! I'm Art from Chicago, IL. My co-pilot is Dakota, an Australian cattle dog. We drive a 2016 Subaru Outback that is still awaiting the first upgrades before we find another summer adventure. We tow a teardrop camper that I made last year. We spent last summer adventuring through MN, MT...
