Anybody take a flatbed truck overlanding? Seems like tool and fuel storage would be a lot easier. If you do, post pictures of the rig, love to get a few good ideas.

While the Willys Truck is my starting point, one of these days I'm going to have to think about a family capable rig. My son is 9 months old now, and eventually one day we will be a family of four God willing. So, those of you with (young) kids, what is a good rig for the family to explore in?

So I was wondering what everybody regarded as the most "classic" rig to take overland. If you look back, the FJ's, Land Rover's, Willys Jeeps/Wagons...what do you guys think goes down as the one that truly pioneered overlanding? Or, the rig that made the biggest impact in the hobby?

For sale is a lightly used floor liner set from Rugged Ridge. Had them in our 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee for about a year and a half, never used and abused them. These sell for $175 on Amazon, asking $75 plus shipping or can pick up in Central Ohio area.

So the Willys truck project has stumped me again. In the essence of keeping the truck more original, traditionally the truck would've ridden on 6.50-16 bias ply tires. I have also thought about more modern 31x10.5r16's. Both are readily available, but which is the better option? If I go tubed...

So the question is kind of broad, and I know what the major answer is...YES IT IS IMPORTANT! Where I'm actually going, what about axles? Gear ratios? Transfer Case Gearing? Etc. Obviously the tougher the terrain, the more gearing down you will want. My '62 Willys is geared to pull tree stumps...

I was wondering if there were any hard mounted must haves on an overland rig. I'm not talking strays, jacks and shovels; I'm thinking more like winches, air compressors, water sources, how many Jerrycans, etc? I honestly don't plan on being on the road more than a long weekend with this first...

So I am starting down the road of tearing down a 1962 Willys Truck to build an overland truck. I am keeping everything stock save three things: suspension & tires, adding an overdrive and disc brakes. The goal is to restore it back to flatbed with removable sides, and eventually I want to build...
