Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
How are both options for a bone-stock '12 Xterra Pro-4X? My D'max (solid axle swapped, 37"s, 4.56s, ARBs) with Four Wheel Camper is out at my home in Vegas, and logistics to go get it and join on this trip just aren't great. But I have the Pro-4X and tent-camping gear with me in the Bay Area...
One of my biggest reservations or concerns is heading to an area I've never been with limited data solo. Generally I'm able to find trail guides, old maps, and these days Youtube videos that give me a lot of insights into the areas I'm heading so that takes a lot of the trepidation out of it...
Not much to update, the Hemi is finally back from the machine shop. Motor mounts are built, we're notching and boxing the unibody for exhaust manifold clearance, then it's all the zillion "little things" to button it all up...

BTW, I ended up getting the TG-6. I took it out the first time in Moab... spent the first day with it in some random mode, then realized it and put it in Auto and am so far very happy w/ the pics. I need to learn more about it, and generally get better about how I frame my photos and stuff...
Not having kids I have no advice as for how to handle the kid on his first trip. But I agree with @Sheedy614 : make a list and check it twice (or thrice) before leaving. Things you can't have too much of: water, non-perishable food reserves, baby wipes (not just for the 5 year old ;) ), warm...
I'm with you here. I used to try to bring every possible spare ever... and quickly realized bringing it all and all the right combos of tools to do it all just becomes too bulky, heavy and cumbersome. The strategy of just replacing wear items ahead of schedule has always worked well for me on...
I Overland my 2011 Silverado, as stated before. I've never heard of this ABS/4x4 engagement problem, much less experienced it. My truck has ~140k miles on it, I've owned it since new, and many MANY of those miles have been off road. It has a lot of modern electronics and systems (like...
Most of my ideas have already been hit... but here are some of my favorites for non-cooler/fridge even if some are repeats:
Chili and fixin's - you can bring a white onion to dice up, you can bring a block of cheddar to grate (no, a block of cheddar doesn't need refrigerated), you can get...
Interesting. Maybe it's just that I've always left-foot-braked any auto car I've ever driven so my left foot is just as adept/smooth at braking as my right. I know for folks that don't regularly left-foot-brake it's like learning to drive all over - very jerky.

Back to the original question, my primary Overlander is a 2011 Silverado 2500 diesel. It's not "old" but it's also not "new." Being a turbo diesel it's a bit more complex than its gasoline counterparts, and generally harder to work on but it's worth it to me for the torque, fuel range etc...
Nearly everything sold in the US these days either has the electric parking brake, or a pedal operated one (mostly pickup trucks). That said, almost everything sold in the US these days is an automatic. I don't see much need/value for a handbrake in an auto, you can just two-foot it. I...
