    Plow Disc Cooking

C’mon guys, there is no such thing as a “plow disc” it’s either a plow or a disc. True, I’m a bit a-/- retentive but not let’s slaughter the definition of things.. here are plows, an old walk behind drawn by horse, mule or oxen, and two modern plows, an enormous 6 bottom reversible plow and a...

    Bilstein 5100s vs OME OME90021

I cannot compare the two as I have never used Billstien. Why should I experiment with another brand when the OMEs are tried and true? After 120,000 miles i thought it might be time for new shocks. I put the new OMEs on only to discover that the old one were still good. I’m running the heavy...

When does cost of a vehicle to build matter to you?

True, people think I’m nuts for trusting a 23 year old vehicle, it’s all just about our wants and opinions..

When does cost of a vehicle to build matter to you?

Here’s the thing TJDon, it all depends on how much money one chooses to spend for vehicles over the course of their lifetime.. very much like boots, 300 for a pair of Asolos or Redwings, that’ll last for 10 years and more, or 100 for a pair that will last for 2 years or less— more power to...

When does cost of a vehicle to build matter to you?

Simply not true—new rigs require the same maintenance as a old rig. Parts on new rigs begin to fail when they are just out of warranty, unless you are suggesting that one should always buy a new vehicle as soon as their current vehicle is out of warranty..

What is your Overlanding Pet Peeve?

My biggest pet peeve is groups of people or convoys in the back country bringing the rat race along with them.. We enjoy the solitude of going out alone. With groups comes, noise, trash, loud talking, and general idiocy.

When does cost of a vehicle to build matter to you?

Unless you drive a Toyota.. over the past 7 years I have spent in PM repairs, ( heater core, radiator, valve stem seals, front and rear main seals, oil pump seal, power steering pumps ) less than 5,000 dollars, the cost of vehicle was 10k, regular maintenance doesn’t count as new vehicles...

When does cost of a vehicle to build matter to you?

Ok, great question. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, only my experience. Circa 1976 I bought my first Toyota Landcruiser. Being very young and very stupid I proceeded to beat the hell out of it. I had no clue what a PM was, let alone servicing it on a regular basis, but it just kept...

    Congratulations to Micheal & Cory

This was for Corrie and Micheal, just a nod of congratulations on a very well done job... It started as an idea, they worked their behinds off to make it happen for all of us. In four short years it is what it is. Their 80 series in an ad in the "National Geographic" of Overlanding publications...

    Congratulations to Micheal & Cory

Well good for you, I too have been in mags , however, Being in OJ having your rig featured in an ad, viewed by overalanders the world over is a whole different ballgame than rags like Peterson’s , JP or TLCA magazines.

    Congratulations to Micheal & Cory

As I’m browsing through the fall edition of Overland Journal I have spotted your famous Landcruiser next to a Gazelle tent. That’s a nice ad and a great shot of your vehicle.. congrats to both of you !!

Horror Stories and getting in over your head on the Trail.

About the dumbest thing I ever did, circa 1977, was to go down a partially snow covered, wet and muddy trail up in the Rockies. No map, no compass, no extraction equipment.. it was an easy 1/2 hour drive down the tight twisty two track into the gully. At the bottom? Dead end. Did I mention...

    Big Bend Anyone?

Very true! Baja eh? I’ve always wanted to do the entire peninsula. In the lower 48 we most always go out and about alone, however, a back road trip down Baja, or up through the Canadien Rockies and over to Alaska? Hmm, it would be better, much better, with a small group, say 3-5 vehicles..

    Big Bend Anyone?

Thanks,, the maximum number of vehicles permitted in a group at Canyonlands NP is three. Big Bend & Big Bend Ranch will soon follow suit. Here in Pa St Forests the number is 10, which the rangers are learning very quickly is too many. I keep the tour that I host at 6, much to the chagrin of...

    Supreme gas...

No, that test was done about 10 years ago with a Jeep Rubicon.. I’ve yet to do any studies with my 80 series LC but after 6 years I’m going to start.. easy math actually 2.7 per gallon divided by 13mpg is 20 cents per mile.. 3.2 - 16mpg = 20 cents per mile , so in order to make premiium...

    Supreme gas...

True, which is why it surprised me as well.. I tested it on a trip to Ohio with pure regular 87 octane. On the way back ethanol blend 10% 87 octane.. 342 miles each way. Carried an extra 10 gallons to make it there as the range is 250 miles.. daughter is a solid state chemist, it made no...

    Supreme gas...

The cost difference per mile may be true when comparing high MPG vehicles but when comparing 12-13 mpg versus 16-17mpg. The last time I calculated, it was hovering right around 2 cents a mile. 8,000 mile round trip tour = steak and salmon instead of chicken & burgers

    Supreme gas...

I’m gonna give this a try.. I know that non ethanol fuel gets roughly 2 more MPG, but you can’t get pure gasoline just anywhere..

    Portable Grill Recommendations

Our mini Weber grill is up in the barn, it was just way to cumbersome to pack as space is at a premium. We tried one of those rectangular grills and it went in the dumpster.. we’ve been using the Volcano grill for going on 5 years.. if it ever fails I’ll get another, cook with charcoal...

    Supreme gas...

What is the real MPG difference with the 96 80 series? I’m getting right about 12 mpg burning regular- your math seems to equal 16 or 17 mpg in order to break even. Do the math for us please.
