Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
Got a doner 79 series landcruiser rolling frame. I’ll use the axles from it. The front has coil spring to replace my leaf springs. The rear is a bolt on but it is a full floating axle. Axles are going to Valley Hybrids in Stockton, CA for a full rebuild.
I’ve ordered all OEM Toyota...
Was concerned about the rear driveshaft hitting the bottom of the tank at full axle deflection so decided to move the cross member 3" back. Did not take long and for now it is just tack welded.
Also the 3 resistors that control the 3 speeds of the fan/blower were broken and rusted. I decided to...
Got a few parts from the paint shop. They were bead blasted and powder coated in the oven BK208 black and RAL7011 gray. Most of the gray parts are under the dash and some were never painted. Probably install an 80 series clutch that has the spring assist. It works similar to a booster.
Finally fuel tank arrived from cruiserparts. Have to admit I was skeptical getting this, but they sure delivered and I am thankful. I need a few more fittings, but will start working on the fuel system while waiting for the "rolling frame of the 79". The 78/79 tank is a bit shorter (front to...
We built a small aluminum case that filters 1 gpm using 12V. It’s on page 1 and 2 of the blog. You can pump from any lake or river if in a remote area or use it connecting to a hose in a campground.
Spent the last 5 days exploring the North Rim of the Grand Canyon isolated from humanity. The place is EPIC, except come prepared with water. In some places you can hike down to the Colorado. Last night on a rim over Lake Powell.
Stop in Redding and met Jason at Trail Tailor to pick up some combo speed sensor. They provide both mechanical and electrical outputs. The reason is that the speedo in the troopy is mechanical but I plan to use the 80 series cruise control system that will require the electrical output.
I also...
Ended up getting a 1/4" thick steel plate ($13.45). I guess price of steel tripled since last year... This will extend the cross member and allow me to use the gussets in the new location. Sand blaster is not working this week so I used the wire brush to clean the weld spots.
A bit of progress this weekend. Finished the engine except the flywheel. Installed the IP and injectors as well as the exhaust manifold.
For now mounted the tranny so the cross member on the frame can be placed. Removed the gussets on th outside of the frame (very carefully so they can be...
Beautiful truck. They have incredible potential, and each person tailors it’s own ‘suit’. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one.
Are you doing any rust protection to keep it clean?
cheers

Spent another weekend working with Overland Bound and NPS to finish building a fence around the Racetrack so people will not drive over it. It was organized by @Kent R with a small group of volunteers.
We also rescued a 30 years old tortoise from the highway before being run over. They are...
Juggling parts of one vehicle. FLYBOX, the diesel 60 has been working hard this week. Managed to tow the frame with a dolley back to our shop. Uhaul asked what vehicle I am towing. I said Prius, and it was too big. Then I tried Yaris and it worked. They even asked the color - WHITE!
I can start...
Did an upgrade on the water tanks. Round 17 gallons PVC to 25 gallons square stainless. Everything else stayed in place. Had to reroute the end of the exhaust a bit.
Made it to Flagstaff leaving at 4AM and getting there at 7PM. Kelly Saad from Landcruisergrills will do the body work. He will also create a metal grill for the troopy.
The IP and injectors came in from the shop in Portland. They look new. Keil and Mark did a magnificent job. I've been...
This is a busy weekend. All bare metal parts are headed to Flagstaff for body work. Some on the roof of the 60, some inside and the body in the trailer. This is formally a frame off project.
