    4Runner Tires

I used BFGs for nearly 40 years on various vehicles. Always got at least 50k miles from a set of 4, more if I rotated 5 in. Then, 4 years ago my tire guy recommended General Grabbers. 285/75/16.E . I pulled some teeth, and tried them. At 55,000 miles rotating 4 it’s time for a new set. I just...

Rig ideas needed for apartment dweller

Wow, you’ve caused me to day dream a bit- 40k budget. Me? Id clean up our 80 series, then put in a completely new somewhat modern drivetrain, think Toyota V8, or LS swap. But you’ve asked about you, so- if I were you, I’d find a GX470 for about 20k in spectacular shape and go from there...

    Electric overlanding

Agreed. EVs will make great commuter vehicles for people living in the burbs. However, as we live in a semi-rural area we have a RAV4 hybrid on order and that will serve our purposes very well. Great for trips to visit family in RI, SC and OH and great for bopping around our side of the county...

Honda Ridgeline/ Pilot Stock VS Lifted Uwharrie Offroad (AWD Festival 2022)

Yikes, encouragement for street vehicles to go on technical trails & tracks. I’ll keep my opinion to myself other than to say, that not long ago some guy & gal asked my advice about the trail ahead. They were in a bone stock F150. They seemed insulted by my advice and went past us in a huff...

    Values

Agreed- 20k is not an unusual price to pay for a pristine example of many many old vehicles. Even mid 60s VW bugs are going for dollars in the mid teens. Anything Toyota or Lexus? Forget it, you’ll be paying top dollar for them.

An open self effacing sense of humor goes a long way too.

I like your approach - calm, civil, records of interactions. But ; but; a Gobi? what did you expect?

    RCI offroad

The RCI website says a 3-7 week wait. Two months is acceptable, no doubt. However, how much of a chance is acceptable? I posted up an unhappiness a few months ago. I gave them a week and multiple correspondences to make it right. Coincidentally or not, they made it right after I posted up...

    Portable heater

We love ours, simple, effective. Even at 10f vent the tent and toasty warm on low.

    Values

That’s a tough one, we never know how good our insurance is until we need it. I’ve a 96 LC LX450. My agent and the underwriters assured me that I would be compensated replacement value. We pulled up flea bay and they were both shocked at the prices. Rust buckets for 5-7k and pristine...

    Doesn’t affect us

True, not much going on the east side of the Appalachias Maine maybe, Pa used to be, but thanks to expo that’s been popularized. Now instead of seeing 3 or 4 other vehicles every couple of days, there are hoards of 6-7-8.. Permits are now required, the Subaru crowd ruined it for everyone.

    Doesn’t affect us

I would debate the many misconceptions in your statement, I’ll focus on one. Controlling our lives. I only know that since my birth, the government has had less and less to do with my personal life and my freedoms. If anything my rights & freedoms have been expanded. However, very recently...

    Doesn’t affect us

Interesting, as these new regs & laws are coming from one of the most staunchly conservative states in the country which is the direct opposite of the lefties. It is simply a very conservative response to a problem that is out of control. A leftie doesn’t want any government intervention at...

    Doesn’t affect us

Yes, there is that. After bearing witness to the degradation of the trails over the past 15 years caused by ill informed folks it will benefit us.

    Nibbling Away at Your Freedoms

Interesting; I too consider it a matter of enforcing laws, rules & courtesies. Going to bed with one political party, or one politician? Once they lose an election, then all agreements are off the table. That's why, in my humble opinion, it is necessary to hedge your bets and play both sides...

    Headed to Big Bend NP.

Hmmm, Terlingua has em, about the only place for hundreds of miles outside the park. No permits needed for a drive, just park entrance fee, as I recall. Permits are needed for primitive camping. It's always a good thing to stop in and make friends with the rangers. They will have the best up...

    Headed to Big Bend NP.

Ya, if anything you are over prepared, other than extra gasoline. We’ve been twice and 3 days isn’t even enough for BB, more like 7-8 days. Are you backcountry camping? You mentioned a small group. I know the rangers do not like seeing more than 3 vehicles in a group. If you’re not...

    Vehicle Mounted Solar options

Imagine that! You outgrew that yeti unit rather quickly. Mount a 100 or 150 watt panel on your roof rack and rearrange where you store stuff. Get a generic panel, yup, sometimes less than a dollar a watt. Here’s how I did it.

    Snow Camping, Do You?

Not on purpose, but we have awakened to a light powdering. We do prefer chilly weather and are quite comfortable with temps down in the middle teens. But Snow camping? Too much like work
