    What is Overlanding?

Thanks m_lars for the clarification. I was serious. Perhaps too serious. I fully abide by and agree with the OB core principles that Overlanding is for everyone and it doesn’t matter what you drive. Outfit and explore. But what I think of as “true Overlanding” is a rare thing in the US. I...

    What is Overlanding?

Overlanding is a vehicle journey that requires refueling from a source transported in addition to the factory fuel tank.

    Come-a-long for 4Runner?

Yes. Rated for three tons with the line doubled. I’ve only practiced with it but I think it could do a lot of work. Not nearly as easy to use as a winch, nor as strong, nor nearly as expensive. I keep it in a toolbox in my truck box with other recovery gear.

    Come-a-long for 4Runner?

I didn’t think you were fighting, I just wanted you to know I wasn’t.

    Come-a-long for 4Runner?

I don’t want to start a fight, because I really believe we’re on the same side. I did put a winky face... I have fire extinguishers in my house even though I’ve never had a house fire. But I don’t have a residential sprinkler system. I carry a pistol even though I’ve never needed to shoot...

    Suspension help

I went with air bags and I’m very happy with the ability to adjust to the specific load I’m carrying. Not too expensive to do a simple version. I went with an on-board compressor and tank with remote control, but I think you can just do bags to fill with a portable inflator and add fancy stuff...

    Neighbors...

Chris_nc, I think I would have kept quiet and felt bad about it. That’s a tough call.

    Come-a-long for 4Runner?

I have a Wyeth-Scott More Power Puller. I do not have a winch and I don’t know when I will. I know it would be quite a challenge to come-a-long myself, but it’s better than not. I have a Hi Lift and know I could do some winching with it, but that’s a couple of feet at a time in a very precarious...

    You're stuck. What now?

All good advice so far, but, not to be critical, I don’t like your premise. “Chances are” you’ll get stuck? I’ve been off-roading for 30 years and it’s never happened to me. I’ve gotten stuck with friends around because I tried something I or my rig wasn’t capable of, but I’ve never gotten stuck...

ARE YOU A PARTY CRASHER?LETS TALK SOME TRASH

One of the reasons I picked OB to join is the “Leave it better than you found it” principle. I’ve tried to live my life this way for many years. I just wish it weren’t so damned easy! And the shotgun shells! Seriously? I’m a shooter and I pick up my brass. There’s nothing easier to pick up than...

    Gear bins?

Definitely weather resistant, with a grooved and gasketed lid. Not waterproof for your photography equipment. I have not had mine exposed enough to know for sure about long-term UV resistance. My feeling is that it will hold up to several years of travel exposure. I love my Wolf Packs...

    Gear bins?

I have one MTM crate that works well. I would say more durable than my Sterilite and less durable than my WolfPack.

What is your favorite nonessential rig add-on?

It’s working quite well. I made a couple of little notches and ran a USB behind the radio from the port to the mount so the cord doesn’t dangle so much. The mounting point never moves but the phone oscillates on the end of the arm a small amount on rough roads. It is very secure and it doesn’t...

Return to Death Valley (A Trip Report)

Fabulous post! I have been researching and planning for a trip there in December and your details will definitely help me plan the trip. Another benefit of OB membership.

Help us spend $2200 on rig upgrades!

On the other hand, you could send me the $2,200, have no further decisions to make and have the warm inner glow that philanthropy brings. Just saying

    Hi Lift help...

I find the versatility of a Hi-Lift worth the weight and space. I’ve never actually used it for anything other than simple lifting, but I know I could. I got ugly high centered just the other day (by my own stupidity, granted) but we needed my Hi-Lift to get me in position to even use my...

    Dual purpose battery question

Thanks for your answer. I have researched boosters and every single one, and I mean every one, and I’ve looked at a lot, has a small but significant minority of people who have serious problems with them. This has moved me away from that as an option. I don’t want to be the guy who gets the...

    Truck bed tie downs

I have been meaning to upload this video for some time and your thread got me to do it. I love these L-tracks from US Cargo Control. Hope this might help.
