US Northwest June 2020 WABDR - Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

With regards to passes, they are not required for merely driving the route. They are typically required for trailheads and in some cases campsites. One of the suggested campsites is at Leader Lake just south of Conconully. I stayed there 2 years ago, and while camping is free, a Discover pass...

I would have walked rather than run myself, but that's just me. You can purchase both the Northwest Forest Pass and the Discovery Pass from REI as well. Both show as available online with curbside pick-up at the Bellevue store tomorrow.

At this point we're not planning any camping location that requires reservations. Except maybe for the last night, some of the options might be reserved. In other word, we might be fighting each other AND the Sasquatch :tonguewink: Well not really, but we might have to improvise if needed so...

@Bilbo, @Greg Eigsti , @oldmopars, @armyRN and others: I'll be happy to arrange a conference call this week and/or next if you want to discuss more plans and details. If you PM me your days / evening hours available I'll set something up.

JLUR won't have any problems for sure. Had to google square drop trailer - if it's anything like the ones on the pictures it should be fine as well. Especially with something as capable as a Wrangler pulling. Worst case, if it falls into ruts and have to be dragged out - are you ok with that...

Thanks @MrWilsonWJ , that is good intel on Bethel Ridge. It's definitely up in elevation and snow can certainly linger in the shade. Might be worth tossing snow chains in the back of the truck next to the maxtrax & shovel, just in case. As for the logs blocking the bypass, did it look like...

@Greg Eigsti I'm in Bellevue, so just down the road from you. I'm all up for caravanning, we could honk at each other on I-5 to stay awake  Earliest I can leave home is ~11pm on Sunday. Might try that and take a nap before 8am. Monday could be a short day on the trail anyway, I...

Rallypoint has the start at 8am, any chance we can push that out to noon? I have a 3.5 hour drive to get there, would be nice if I didn't have to start from home at 4am... Also not sure where every else is starting from, suspect I'm not the only one with a bit of a drive to get to Stevenson.

    Yaesu FTM-400XDR vs Kenwood D710G

I stopped by Ham Radio Outlet in Portland, OR and tried both radios before I bought mine. They're close enough in features that I didn't care too much, but I ended up liking the tactile feel of the keys on the Kenwood better. Here's how I have it mounted in my 4th gen 4Runner: Kenwood D710GA...

With regards to FRS handhelds being an option, strongly suggest getting a mobile GMRS radio - maybe something like the Midland MXT115. Handhelds won't reliably reach the whole group, and depending on others to relay will get old well before we reach Nighthawk... Having an antenna on top of...

    Kenwood D710GA Mounting Solutions

I use a ProClip mount for the head. Never found a great spot for the main radio part, so I used bolts/washers/nuts to secure it to the carpet in the passenger foot well.

    Ham radio modifications

Looks like "Joe" was able to get it to work with the programming software. Does that work on your radio? https://www.amazon.com/ask/questions/Tx140H8KJ4VJTNJ/ref=ask_dp_dpmw_al_hza Does this radio support gmrs and frs transmit/receive? Answer: Yes, but the radio needs to be unlocked through...

@Greg Eigsti does it look like we're converging on GMRS for comms? If yes, I need to go get licensed. I'm so looking forward to getting out there...

How to hold a handheld HAM securely in the rig

Keeping a handheld in a charging cradle while driving on bumpy roads will be a challenge. Maybe a BaoFeng UV-9S would be better, you can connect a charging cable directly to the battery.

Questions about getting into Ham and APRS

Just for kicks, I installed APRSdroid on my Android head unit and connected the programming cable between one of the USB ports on the head unit and the serial connector on the back of the TM-D710GA head. No bluetooth, no extra parts needed. Here's how I set it up: ge0rg/aprsdroid As with...
