  • Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance August 4th and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

    Hatchet or machete?

Thanks for the responses! I do have an Estwing axe with the metal handle had it for 20 years, but don't like to take it camping. I have not personally broken a Fiskars, but within the last 6-8 months have read of 2 that have broken. Yep that Woodmans if big $$$, it looks to travel well size...

    Hatchet or machete?

Not that I don't like it, but the handles tend to break and you can't replace the handle.

Gas Lantern or Battery powered Lantern?

I a, didn't have the dad thing growing up, instead when the time came I was the dad and got the Coleman whitegas double mantle lantern for our Black Rock Desert trips in the 70's. Hated the fact I had to replace the mantles EVERY FRELLING TRIP, and sometimes multiple times on the vacation as...

do you skip 3/8 drive sockets?

Just as an aside, I've found that by removing(breaking the plastic) handles off of a set of nut drivers I can put them in my cordless drill and make short work of removing/installing nuts and bolts. Sometimes only using the rachet for initial loosening or final torqueing.

do you skip 3/8 drive sockets?

As I stated before I mostly use the 3/8's, I would advise getting the deep sockets, they can fit over the nut ends when you can't fit a spanner. I keep all my 3/8's in a Plano box, that way they don't get wet from condensation, rain, deep puddles or dirty from dusty conditions. I keep my 1/4's...

do you skip 3/8 drive sockets?

I mostly use 3/8, SAE and Metric, but if I have to set torque, I need the 1/2 to fit the wrench. Not much use for 1/4 on my rig, but it does allow for tightening some hose clamps in difficult places.

Dometic Fridge in Pickup Bed and Bear Country

Trail pilot, a bearproof container or hanging from a tree works best and I think we can all agree that inside a vehicle is not bearproof. The issue becomes how much food did you bring and can you fit it in a bearproof container or a hang. What ever do not put it in your tent with you either...

What knives do you guys recommend?

I just don't find the jobs to warrant carrying a multi tool while camping. I carried one at work for years and it was handy there. My dailey is a 40 year old Buck 560 folder, usually in my pocket and always sharp. I have a couple of fixed blades, but rarely carry them, they are in the rig if I...
