We had a saying among my friends a number of years ago when I did a lot of off roading; “Rocks good, mud bad, water is for drinking and boats.”
Mud is liquid sandpaper that gets into everything. I’ve had to replace several throwout bearings on my CJ because of mud, fun as it is. Know several...
lol. Thanks. The two big things I see every summer is (1) Wallyworld sit-on kayaks are not intended for dynamic water, especially class II and III rapids or higher, (2) Pool floats and tubes are not meant for rivers, especially if there’s rapids. Rocks eat those things and will make you swim.
I’m on my county’s Swift Water Rescue team, so I’m probably tuned in more to these issues than those that aren’t avid water recreationists.
I cringe at some of the water crossings I see in “overlanding” videos.
Curious, are you planning on doing some clean up on some of the roads going in, or primarily just on Flagpole?
I'm seeing if I can get the stars to align to join in on this. I'm in Harpers Ferry, so I'd meet up with you either along the way, depending on your route of travel or in Harrisonburg.

There's some good hiking with awesome...
To largely echo what the previous replies have been; there is no simple answer. I'm on part of this learning curve myself.
I think having and knowing resources available is part of the battle. I've accumulated a sizable folder of bookmarks for trip planning.
Don't know if you have these...
I've read that the mini's gps system won't let it fly in areas that one is not supposed to fly a drone anyway. I could see this being frustrating if one is on the edge of a national park. Can any of you that have one give some feedback on this?
I almost bought one at Costco back in November...
Dusther, are you driving from NJ to Sweitzer Thursday morning, or camping Wed night in the area?
Where are you planning on picking up the MABDR? Will you be running it north or south? From what I've seen of the map of MABDR, the route passes west of Flagpole on Rt 33. Doing Peters Mill...
Hamstudy also has listings of clubs doing testing.
It's also a fantastic study aid. It helped me tremendously when I was studying.
