COBDR Route Timing for a July '22 Run

@zgfiredude ...oh...and I'm SUPER excited to what you find along the WYBDR. Particularly with regards to how well a full-size will fit along it. At first glance it appears that the route sticks more to the plains than the mountains/woods...but a map and a short promo video only give so much...

COBDR Route Timing for a July '22 Run

@Neal A. Tew and @zgfiredude ...appreciate the insights and offers. We're familiar with the BDR model and have done both the MABDR and most of the NEBDR. We combined the NE and Appalachian Byway for a trip to Maine last September...primarily because finding interesting dirt routes out here on...

COBDR Route Timing for a July '22 Run

Hey, @Neal A. Tew While I've BEEN to Colorado a couple times...this is the first overlanding trip. All my past trips (while in summer) were strictly pavement based getting from one place to the other...and taking an entire day to hike to the peak of Vail (we were staying in Avon) while locals...

COBDR Route Timing for a July '22 Run

My wife and I and our two four-legged psychos are taking three weeks to get away from Virginia and follow the COBDR S to N come July in our Sequoia. While winging it is half the adventure, due to taking the opportunity to visit friends living in Denver while we're out there, I kinda sorta have...

Members with information/experience/interest in Pennsylvania State Forests for off pavement travel/dispersed camping

Was really hoping to either get out down here in VA, or make the trip up there to BESF to take advantage of the long weekend for some trailer camping and hiking. We'd already squashed the idea with the dangerously cold temps. Hiking for just 2-4 hours while worrying about keeping the dogs...

    Dog crates/vehicle restraints?

So this is one of those answers of...it depends. How much space are you willing to give up? What's your budget? My dogs' safety takes precedence over a lot of stuff...and, frankly, is why I'm in a Sequoia as opposed to a 4R (that I'd rather have). If I just had ONE dog...4R all the way. I...

Media Thread: Where did you go this summer?

My wife, I, and our two dogs took an EPIC trip from VA to Liberty, ME in early September. I overlaid the NEBDR and Appalachian Byway; tracing the more direct...ish combined route. Packed up our Sequoia, and drove for five days, camping on the roof at a state park, a hipcamp site, and two...

    Overland Expo East 2021

@Ohio Valley Overland where in the "DC area"? We're in Front Royal, VA (70 miles west, but still considered the DC area to non-locals ). But I work near Dulles airport. Feel free to PM me if you want as we may be able to grab them. My wife and I will only be at the Expo on Friday, though.

    NVA overland truck shop

A little further west than you'd asked for, but there's Aylestock Automotive (aylestockautomotive.com) in Lovettsville, and Off Road Innovations (orioffroad.com) in Winchester.

    NEBDR in a 4WD

I've only run the northern half of MA2 from Liberty, VA (US-250) through MA3 to US-48. From everything I've read, that's where a vast majority of actual dirt is...as well as the southern half of MA2. Any and all dirt was strictly well-maintained, and wide, forest roads with a couple dips...

    NEBDR in a 4WD

Sounds good! I'd already planned on taking alternatives (other than CR3), so should be covered there. And we're all set on sites! Reserved a site at a New York State Park, and two Hipcamp private sites (one on the way up, one on the way back), and will boondock two nights on the way up that...

Did you ever get out to do the route, @young ?

    NEBDR in a 4WD

Was this County Route 3 up Vly Mountain? I'm about to finalize my NEBDR/Appalachian Byway mash-up to get us from NW Virginia to Maine in September. Currently I have us staying on CR3, but if it's too narrow (lifted 1st-gen Sequoia with RTT), then we'll bypass it.

No Virginia / CVT RTT - Mt Shasta Extended, w/ Front Runner quick attach / $1800 / plus other items available

Gotcha. If you're on Facebook...just to improve your reach...check out the "Classifieds for Overland, Expedition, Camping and Off Road" and "Used Roof Top Tents Bought & Sold - USA" groups. Selfishly I'm suggesting those to sell your tent faster so I can snag that hoist.

Have you explored the WV side of George Washington National Forest (GWNF)?

GWNF for the most part consists of tame, wide, forest roads. There are only a few, actual, "trails". Potts Mountain Jeep Trail (not to be confused with just Potts Mountain Road) is typically argued to be the hardest and most legit actual trail. It's down towards Covington, VA. Even named...

No Virginia / CVT RTT - Mt Shasta Extended, w/ Front Runner quick attach / $1800 / plus other items available

Hey, @Maceo40 ...I'm interested in the hoist if you still have it. Looking at it, though, I'm assuming there's still a decent amount of wrangling as the arm is far too short to actually get OVER the roof. Any idea on the height it can reach? Looks like it should be tall enough, especially...

Help/Advice With Trip Home Via TAT/GAT/App Byway...

Thanks @justjames, that’s very helpful! Sounds like it may be between the GAT and TAT. Hoping to get some intel yet on that section of the TAT yet. Sounds like both that end of the MABDR and the Appalachian Byway are both a good bit of pavement. Something to leave for the fall when we’ll be...

In mid-May my wife and I will be taking our built 1st gen Sequoia with RTT and our two dogs down to Anniston, AL to run the U.S. Canine Biathlon over a weekend. The goal is to hit the road Monday morning after the events (and a good night's sleep in a real bed after a real shower, and proper...
