    SVO ....Small Vehicle Overlanding

Ya know, I do like a challenge. I'm starting to think when the Ex is done I might have to start outfitting our Cube...

    Worst stuck

My worst stuck was when I got my old Monty SR all kinds of buried. Took an AC D21 to pull her out.

How to Start a Fire - Collected Wisdom

Well, it does tend to attract fat people (I oughtta know) but so far no Canadians, though we did catch ourselves an Australian over the weekend. Man, them Aussies have powerful appetites. Like they got tapeworm or somethin'. :D We don't live in an area where giant furry murderous critters are...

    Vehicle Tools (Merged thread)

Just speaking on mechanical repairs I carry a set of the common wrenches and sockets for my vehicle, cordless 1/2" impact, serpentine tool, BFH, prybar ( also serves as a fire poker and great for moving rocks n shit out of the way) and, maybe most important, a 1/2" torque wrench. Maybe it's the...

How to Start a Fire - Collected Wisdom

We save our bacon grease, egg cartons, lint, the little TP rolls, PT rolls cut in half, newspaper, anything that burns. The grease gets applied to cotton balls, lint, newspaper, whatever. Then we use all of that stuff to fill the egg cartons, TP and PT rolls. We stuff em into Ziploc bags and...

    Food & Water

An Indel fridge is in our future but for now we run a Coleman 70qt 5-day cooler for our perishables. We have two Sterilite bins that fit perfectly inside and stack on top of each other. They have holes in the sides and then I drilled holes in the bottoms to help circulate air. We use 12 small...

Ogre's 05 Ford Explorer: The Unlikely Overlander

Went to the local pick n pull to look for some cross bars for the roof rack. For some reason a lot of 3rd and 4th gen Explorers didn't have them, despite having the side rails. Anyway, found just one 3rd gen on the whole lot and it happened to have the cross bars. Winning! Got them mounted...

    Firewood

Every year we buy a truckload of firewood and store it in the garage for both camping and our fireplace, but we're in a no-transport zone now that the emerald ash boarer has made its way here. If we camp in another county we just buy bundles from vendors near the campgrounds we frequent and...

    Tire Suggestions

I ran Federal Couragia MTs on my Montero, did great all year round. A bit noisy on the highway but that's the nature of a mud terrain. They wore prettg good, though. I liked em so much I'll probably put em on the Explorer.

Ogre's 05 Ford Explorer: The Unlikely Overlander

The wife and I picked up this 05 Explorer last year to replace our beloved but rapidly aging 94 Montero SR. At first we had no intention of building up a rig but our shared love for camping and my love of everything off road has pushed us to find a way to combine the two. Now, we're going into...

What Trail Condition Do You Fear The Most?

Pretty sure that pic is part of the Telluride side of Black Bear. The "I don't wanna die" part of me wants to skip it and turn around at the summit haha.

What Trail Condition Do You Fear The Most?

Exactly. One slip and you've just earned yourself a toe tag. My butt puckers just looking at that pic.

What Trail Condition Do You Fear The Most?

All of my trail experience has been here in the midwest and the odds of getting yourself killed on a trail ride around here are pretty low unless you're just obscenely stupid or actively trying to die. So, I'd say shelf roads are what worry me the most. I've never driven on anything like them...

    Camp Priorities

Not many dispersed camping areas around here and the campgrounds usually have a 4pm check-in, which means we're rolling in close to dinner time, so we prep our first night's meal ahead of time and pick up a few bundles of wood onnthe way to the campground. That leaves... crack a beer start...

    1993 Land Cruiser

Hmm... I think I've seen this movie. Make sure to cut the yellow and pink at the same time, otherwise you'll be wiping your butt with a stainless steel hook. LOL What are your plans for her?

    Iowa

Hmmm... Well, I know next summer/fall we're going down to the Ouachita National Forest. It's a solid ten hours with fuel stops (9h7m on Google Maps) but that leaves two full days to explore. Edit: There's always those route maps that were posted. Thinking about checking those out over...

    Member Rides

Nice. I had a Sidekick many years ago. A bit small for me, but I liked that I could take it just about anywhere a Jeep could go. I put a hardtop on mine because the old vinyl top was really noisy and cold as hell during the winter.

    Iowa

I'll get a build thread going at some point. Just got back to Des Moines and processing what we learned. Definitely need to make some changes, but strangely enough we repacked everything for the drive home, better than we did when we left yesterday. Go figure. We definitely have a lot of...
