So far the Magruder is good, albeit it smoky and dusty. Depending where your son is returning to, Hwy 93 and Hwy 12 near Florence and Lolo, MT are still subject to closure, but are running pilot cars. Going through there tomorrow, I think it's more so people don't stop and gawk.
Surprisingly great-
The 4 man pop up tent from Coleman. One second up, ten seconds to pack away. I bought after my dog shredded the mesh on my Mountain Hardware Haven 3, figuring I'd fix the Haven this Winter. The 7lb tent has withstood more than 50 nights of abuse from two feral dogs and two...
I've explored a decent portion of Canada , a bit of Mexico and Germany (boyfriend had a vehicle there). Iceland is on my list, but I'll just rent a rig and live out of the backpack.
But there's so much I still want to explore in the US and Canada, that Iceland may be a few years off.
I carry a 3.5gal fuelpax everyday, it's an hour to the closest fuel. But if im going in the backwoods I take 10. Around my part of Idaho you can spend 8 hrs going less than 50miles, then if you're in 4high or low, that'll suck the gas right up.
And more often than not when my cans get open...
Ugh. I'm fearing this in ID as well. Your post prompted me to call the Adams Co. Sheriff's Dept., they said they'd be there in a heartbeat as long as we're the property owners, no incidents thus far.
I'm hoping in some regard that the "gun toting Idahoan" will keep idiots from trespassing on...
Sounds like a great trip. As a former San Francisco resident, and having had numerous projects in LV, remove/lock or cover everything you have. If you go up the Lochsa in Idaho to MT, I'll be around.
All tools and equipment stay in and on the rigs, there's too great a chance of it getting used on any given day. Only thing I remove is the pop up privy and the dutch oven table until a trip warrants them.
I was gifted one at a grill over in WA today, I got into a whole discussion on why they chose a particular kind to sell. The guy said a bail top is best since it holds the carbonation longer, screw tops will still slowly leak CO2. It is glass, but kt was free, now I need a stainless bail top, i...
MT just closed Hwy 12 due to wildfire by the Lolo Pass, this is the main route to Montana from north central part of Idaho. Drivers will have to go to I90 in CdA. H/T to Chris, not sure of your OB handle.
I've seen the glass growlers for a many years, but glass in my life is a no-no. We lead way too rough and tumble lives. On our last Magruder run, while on resupply in Hamilton, MT, one group member showed me the path to enlightenment; He threw down a stainless steel container at Bitteroot...
I've never made it to LaGrande, but its about 3 hrs from the 84/95 exit to Grangeville , driving the speed limit. Then it'd be another 30 miles down the Harpster grade to Clearwater (Sally Ann rd.), or you could drive down to Elk City on 14 and run it backwards.
We just finished running the historic Elk City Wagon Road, a 50 mile stagecoach trail from the Clearwater Valley to Elk City Idaho. Wildfire smoke has blanketed the region, so many of the exquisite views of the Gospel Hump Wilderness and Nez Perce NF are obscured, but the trail is well marked...
Hoping you guys are safe and all those fires get contained and mopped up soon. The IDBDR section around Florence, ID, the section from Avery to Wallace and Hoodoo Pass at the MT/ID line is also closed. North Central Idaho is now under stage 1 fire conditions.
Kent is fantastic. I learned to never wash my coffee pot from him. I don't have a kitchen here at the cabin, so we've become pretty adept at making just about anything over a fire, woodstove or solar oven. Great vid! Only thing I really need to refine more is pressure canning over a fire.
We use our solar ovens quite a bit, both overlanding and at the basecamp. Yaffe's "Solar Cooking for Home and Camp" is one of the best I've come across. In addition to the basic "slow cooker" type cooking that's so popular, she goes into trail mix, granolas, baking, and using the cooker to break...
Great post. I've got a tender parked outside of the cabin with Quikfists holding many of the handtools. Looks like i'm giving her a good once over on the clamps this morning, I'm not sure when they were installed.
