If you can afford the rear tire carrier I’d prefer that. It’s easier to get to and offers other benefits as well, lower GC, higher clearance, and additional options.

I work out of a tote as well. I remember the chuck boxes we had in scouts been very heavy and I’m trying to stay light.

I personally prefer ground tents for a Number of reasons. I recommend the Eureka Timberline 4.

If you get it it will be the last tent you ever have to buy.

Wow, nice Tacoma! I really wish my cap had windoors like yours. I may have missed it, but did you regear for the 285s? If not how is the 3.5L handling the extra weight?
I use a chainsaw very infrequently and I have been considering getting a battery operated chainsaw. The Dewalt DCCS670X1 FLEXVOLT 60V MAX Brushless Chainsaw seems pretty good, and i could charge the battery in the truck. thoughts?
I cannot make a recommendation specific to your crosstrek, but tires are always the best bang for your buck. They have the biggest impact on how the vehicle starts, stops and steers on road and off. I good AT tire will go a long way. The BFG KO2 and Cooper AT3 are both great options.
