    Let's Talk Cast Iron

"Gentile" means "not Jewish". Oh I figured it was a typo, I was just saying I thought it was funny. But yeah getting wild with heavy cast iron on a glass cooktop seems like it could spell disaster.

    Let's Talk Cast Iron

I know you meant "gentle", but now I'm just imagining that Jews aren't allowed to use glass top stoves.

    2WD vs 4WD

I don't really think it's particularly fair to compare janky 1960's engineering in an exhibition car to a properly designed AWD system. Also FWIW, the Hairy Olds would only run like 11s in the 1/4mi. Spent most of it's power spinning tires, which doesn't translate to actual speed.

    Building a pull-out kitchen?

Yeah, it's a long car -- I actually prefer having a bit longer but less "stocky" looking, hence why I opted for an Outback instead of a Forester. I probably won't have a *ton* of stuff in it, we have a tote with all of our general camping gear right now that's maybe 50-60lbs, I suspect we'll...

    Camp stove cooking

Whatever you're capable of cooking normally, should have no problem cooking out on the trail. Main things to keep in mind are the cookware you'll need, what your camp stove can handle (can you do two pots/pans at once? Or just one?), and what kind of food you can bring/store. There's a...

    Building a pull-out kitchen?

softroadingthewest on YouTube was a source of inspiration for me and his setup has a flip-out extension that seemed pretty simple. On the right hand side with my rear seat folded down, I have 66" depth and 25" width. I was hoping to get some long drawer slides to maximize the amount of "pull...

Gluten Free pre-pared food options for overland?

Cheers! Plus it seems like a good idea for food longevity, too. Could easily spend some time prepping a bunch of stuff to toss in the pantry so you can just grab & go on future trips :)

    Building a pull-out kitchen?

Oh, absolutely. I'm sure it'll be easy to get carried away, but as of right now I'm giving myself a maximum height of 13" (based on measurements of the car) for the "kitchen" side, and I'm not intending to include any kind of sink, running water, etc. The primary thoughts right now are storage...

    Building a pull-out kitchen?

Yeah metal is more expensive, hence why I'm considering using pretty much all wood. Though I may see if I can score some stock... we'll see. Anywho, thanks for the recommendations on hardware. I'm not afraid to spend a little bit of money for quality stuff if it means the build goes smooth...

Gluten Free pre-pared food options for overland?

Seems like most of the "meal in a bag" type stuff is just freeze-dried, so perhaps you could experiment with making your own? REI seems to have a pretty decent article on preparing your own dehydrated foods, which I found here: How to Dehydrate Food: Fruits, Vegetables, Meat & More | REI Co-op...

    Building a pull-out kitchen?

I already started a project thread for my Subie and will definitely put any such stuff in there :) I would love to see pictures! My build isn't going to be as ambitious since we don't have a fridge, but yeah same general idea. We do have a table saw at home, part of why I don't mind doing it...

    Let's Talk Cast Iron

I like cast iron both as general cookware, but I like it's durability for "not at home" stuff as well. Well seasoned cast iron will hold up to water and soap just fine. The seasoning process involves polymerization for that nice hard, non-stick finish so as long as you don't scrub like an ape...

    Building a pull-out kitchen?

Hey y'all. So I have my recently acquired 2018 Subaru Outback. I measured the back after seeing some clever pull-out kitchen designs and I'd really like to make one. I'm drawing/thinking currently, and will probably be doing cardboard cutouts to figure out drawer configs and whatnot. Mainly I...

    Ruby Rhod, a 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5

Hey y'all! New to OB and new to Overlanding in general. This is Ruby Rhod, my 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5, a vehicle purchased jointly between my spouse and I as a platform to carry us on off-roading, overlanding, camping adventures. After years and years of us both driving small, low hatchbacks we...

    Coffee Set Ups

Yeah by and large it's just going to be my spouse and I, though I may keep the percolator around so I can toss it in the tote if we're going out with multiple people. But most mornings we'll only be going through 2-4 cups of coffee between the two of us. Hence why I'd rather have a french...

    Let them eat SPAM!

I've never been a huge fan of Spam but I was given a tin of it before my first camping outing (going to go break in / test out the gear) and I'll tell you what, spam and eggs made a damn fine breakfast at camp. I'll probably keep a few cans floating around the car.

    Coffee Set Ups

Currently we just have a basic, blue enameled steel percolator. I'm not a huge fan of percolators because of how they can burn the coffee, but it was inexpensive and it turned water into coffee, so I'm not complaining. In the future I'll probably figure out a way to add a french press to my...

Member Introductions *NEW MEMBERS INTRODUCE YOURSELF*

Hey y'all! Long been interested in overlanding, but just now getting in to it with a (reasonably) suitable vehicle and actually owning camping gear. I'm in the Santa Rosa, CA area, and I have a 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5. No real experience as of yet, I did my first bit of driving "off road"...
