    Iowa

@TRYAGAIN Welcome! I haven't met anyone here yet but it seems like a pretty good bunch of guys. Except for that Ogre guy. He seems like trouble.

    Rig Mounted Must Haves?

Since you brought up electrical, one of the things I have done with all of my vehicles and always recommend doing, is what's known as a "big three" upgrade. This is something I took from my time installing car audio where multiple amps are drawing huge amounts of current but it translates to...

    Matching paint

Latex paint retains a bit of elasticity that allows wood to breathe but since automotive paint hardens up, will the natural swelling and shrinking of the wood cause the paint to crack? Maybe ask your paint guy about that just to make sure it'll hold up. It might not even be an issue but it's...

    Stronger roof rails - Unistrut?

I appreciate the offer but this is a project I'll tackle sometime next spring/summer after the baby is born. Right now we're trying to get moved and such so money is kinda tight. I'm just trying to plan this out in the meantime. FWIW, I'm looking at using about a 94" ramp to get the length I...

    Stronger roof rails - Unistrut?

So I'm just looking for some input on this. At some point I want to do a full-length roof rack and an RTT on my Ex but with the factory rail mounts being plastic I want to replace them with some beefier rails to support the weight. I don't want to pay a fabricator several hundred dollars to...

    1995 Isuzu Trooper

I had a Trooper before my Montero. I never got around to adding bumpers but I did an Old Man Emu lift, custom rock sliders, and and 33" tires. I'd have kept her, and had bought a Yukon locker for the Dana 44. Sadly I went through three transmissions in less than a year and sold her out of...

Offline maps for tablet or smartphone....what app do you use?

Gaia looks more appealing to me by the day. I like Maps.Me for on-road use but I do realize it's not going to be as useful as BCN or Gaia when I'm on a trail. I think the reason I like that it does recogize forest service roads (at least the ones I found) is that I can use the app to get me...

Offline maps for tablet or smartphone....what app do you use?

I've been using Maps.Me for general navigation purposes and just out of curiosity I searched a couple of forest service roads within the app and it was able to show them. Does the app show stuff like that consistently? I don't live anywhere near a national forest to try and use the app for...

    GPS

I've been on the search for a GPS and as 1Louder stated, a tablet seems to be the way to go. The versatility of a tablet, combined with the plethora of available navigation apps geared toward off road use, the ability to monitor your rig's vitals and a 10" screen if you so desire, and it's a...

    General Grabber AT's

I started looking into the Grabber AT2s after watching the Expedition Overland series. I realize they're sponsored by General Tire but if the AT2s were good enough to get those guys to Prudhoe Bay and the Darien Gap, then how bad can they possibly be, right? So I started reading every review I...

    Roof rack recommendations?

I can see how that would be beneficial. Sadly, my truck Ex doesn't have gutters.

    Roof rack recommendations?

Rola is a decent rack for the money, about $250 with the extension. It's a fairly low profile, about a 4" height I think. I personally run a Bison rack (same as Curt and Arksen) with the extension on my Explorer and it works pretty well. I paid $120 shipped on ebay. It's a bit taller at...

    Big Tuna Presents: Pegasus Rising

I want a friggin strawberry milkshake now. Thanks for that.

Ogre's 05 Ford Explorer: The Unlikely Overlander

Went simple for the awning mounts, just some U bolts. There's not much weight to support since it's just PVC pipe that extends out and the tarp attaches to a bolt on each end with wing nuts. I sprayed the outer pipe with bedliner but ran out before I got to the endcaps. Still doesn't look too...

    Roof Rack Ideas

165K on a Nissan? No sweat. Replace the timing chain and tensioners, throw a new water pump at it, rad hoses and a tune up. I turned wrenches for a Nissan dealer, my brother still does. We've seen Nissans with 500K on the odo and still going strong. Hell, I had an old Maxima that was my...

Ogre's 05 Ford Explorer: The Unlikely Overlander

The roof rack and Keeper both came yesterday so I got the rack mounted up this afternoon. I went with a Bison rack and it seems like it should suit our needs. I did read that the Bison/Curt/Arksen rack suffers from horrible rust issues as a result of water getting inside the tubing. To remedy...

Ogre's 05 Ford Explorer: The Unlikely Overlander

Alright, well we have a roof rack on order and that should be here by Friday. We also have a Keeper 15 cubic foot weatherproof bag on the way. I found one used for $30, and after reading a bunch of positive reviews I figured it would be worth a shot. Seems like it should be plenty big enough...

    Inside or Roof Rack?

This is basically our plan. We're going with a Keeper weatherproof bag on the rack, that'll have our tent, chairs, sleeping bags, etc. Basically all of the lightweight yet bulky stuff. The heavy stuff - fuel, water, cooler/fridge, kitchen, tools, all of that will be in the back of the rig.

    Camp Photos!

I've had better views, but I've had a lot worse.

    Inside or Roof Rack?

Right now everything gets packed inside but I'll be installing a roof rack in a couple weeks. Timing couldn't be better, we've got a kid on the way now and our rig is also my daily, which means we need all the room we can spare.
