Very good, practical advice. And so very true! Especially about the "secretly" hoping to find this one specific, perfect vehicle. Don't be too quick to pull the trigger settling for something, be patient and you might just find your ideal rig.
Don't make my mistake. :) I had my heart on an...
Good point. I really liked my 93 Trooper, though the 3.2 was a little anemic. It was a great vehicle. I used to go to tower sites in the mountains, and often I'd use my Trooper instead of my company S-10 blazer because the Trooper was more sure footed.
Another OB member mentioned the Mitsubishi Montero in another thread. Not the sport but the big one. Looking around you can find them for about 4000. Not as popular as the Toyotas or Jeeps. I think the last two years for them had the better engine. Not your typical choice but it might be a good...
Wow. Sorry that happened to you, glad everyone is OK. That other driver was being negligent and careless. Sure the Raptor can do all that and be a lot of fun in its own right, but people like that are the ones remembered and point at as justification to close off access to places. Glad you're...
I have a 13 explorer with about 8 inches and it usually makes it anywhere I've wanted to go. No low range though.

How much ground clearance is needed and any reason for low range? Most of the beaches I've driven on around Galveston at least didn't need lots, mostly good tires and driving. Used to go out in 2wd cars all the time when I lived there ages ago.

I don't mind 15 to 20 but I hate these 18 gallon tanks that barely give you 350 miles. And off road or other driving it can drop under 300. That montero is sounding pretty good.

How do you like the vehicross? I've always liked that vehicle and want one but never could find one when I was in the market. Any tips or gotchas to look out for?

The montero not the montero sport right? What kind of mileage, and more importantly, range are you getting?

I have a 2013 Ford explorer. It wasn't bought with camping or overlanding in mind, but after seeing how well it handled snow and ice on normal tires I put some BFG AT TAKO2s on and was even more impressed slugging thru some muddy forest service roads. No low range and barely 8 inches of...
Years ago I had an s10 blazer stolen from a hotel. Never got it back. It wasn't speedy but the gearing on that with the 2.8 was a surprisingly potent combination. Miss that unassuming little guy. Mechanic friend tuned and tweaked it as a wedding gift, was getting 21+ mpg pulling a loaded uhaul...
