Hi OB friends!
My wife and I make mediocre home movies of our adventures -- we barely know our way around our camera, and editing is more trial and error with iMovie. We aren't looking to be rich or famous, but we enjoy sharing our travels with our friends. And maybe someday these vids can be...
Much neater than my solution, which was to google "wiring looms in a JK", pray a little, hope for the best, and use self-tappers into the dash. No airbags exploded and 100,000 km later it's not burnt to the ground so I think I'm OK, but your solution is WAY nicer. I'll use that on my next jeep...
Also most chain restaurants that serve ribs (Montanas is one that springs to mind) have wet wipes that are individually packaged...not eco-friendly but I keep a handful in the car just in case and they never dry out. Ask the server for a stack and sometimes they can hook you up. Trouble is you...
Hi Matt,
Short answer: Gobi Stealth Racks will fit the tent. Granted, I use my Gobi Stealth on a JK but according to Gobi's website, the JK rack is 54 inches wide where the Toyota's is 45 inches wide. I'll explain how the tent mounts so you'll understand my confidence.
The way RTTs mount is...
We've already posted our system, but one more comment -- the value of a proper shower is huge for us and if anyone stumbles on this thread with the thought "Bah! A Shower? It's CAMPING! Look at these softies with their showers and such. I bet they even have $400 teak shower mats in their rigs!"...
Another thing to consider -- what time are you rolling into camp at?
For us, on a lot of our trips, we don't camp until 8, 9, or even after 10 PM at night, and it's pretty much Dinner, a drink or two, and then reading in the tent until we doze off. We're up and gone early the next morning to...
I think you will find your definition of what "comfortable" is would change with an RTT.
I used to do the exact same thing as you, and I was comfortable considering I was sleeping in the back of a jeep. Comfort in an RTT is on a whole different level in my experience.
But an RTT does change...
My two cents on the water discussion: how much water you bring is never enough for extended trips, so we bring enough for a few days and are set up to filter more.
With a bit of creativity, an MSR dromedary can be used as a "dirty" water bag and the spigot can be plumbed with a Sawyer Mini...
I like those hardshells but am not a huge fan of the cost! Great if you can find them used though!
How do you find the headroom in it? The wife and I like to read before bed sitting up.

I had pelicans, switched to Tusk for the very reason you described. The top loaders hold more and are easier to use around camp.
It really is a personal preference thing. The way the Tusk footman loops work I can pop a lid and access the contents of the pannier even if I had stuff on top like...
I see the OP already mentioned that the tiger's underwent a massive redesign in around 2010/11. It's worth reiterating that the modern t800 is very different than a 98 one, and better in virtually every way from an Overlanding perspective -- easier to fix, more reliable, way more availability in...
Yup, these groups buys can be a great option. Another advantage of getting the RTT at REI is your annual member dividend. Even as a Canuck I try to take advantage and if there's that fancy stove or bit of camp kit you've been eyeing that rebate may make the Tepui worthwhile.

99% of the time, so am I. But it does depend how you plan to use it. Resources are finite so I'm in favour of judicious spending on these high ticket items.
Mold grows just as fast on an expensive tent as a cheaper one. 1000D fabric will tear on the same dog's claws no matter how much you spent...
Depends on how you define "best" .
Bang for the buck, I'd say it's hard to go wrong with the Smittybilt. Their Overlander XL is nearly half the price of comparatively sized Tepui and CVT options (at least it is in Canada) at just over $1500 for a large tent. Combine that with the "no questions...
At first blush this is the same as the Ecotemp model I have, just a different brand. No complaints other than the bulk.
I previously posted talking about the fiddlyness, but it's not too bad as I just used it this past weekend. The key is to prime the system in stages -- prime the pump lines...
Another element to consider is that I've more often used my spare gas for others than I have for myself. Plan all you like but then life happens to you and to others, and it's nice to have 5 gallons to throw someone else's way if they made a calculation error in their efforts, or ended up with a...
My first love is motorcycles but I occasionally cheat on my Triumph with a boxy Jeep JKU.
I find with bikes and 4 wheel drives I've never seen one I don't like.
There's a mathematical formula for the number you should aquire. It's N + 1 = the correct answer, where N is the number you already...
