We'll be camping out at Bullards Bar on Thurs night, then hitting Henness Pass early Friday AM, and should be over by Bowman in the evening. We'll be working our way south to the El Dorado NF boundary.
Ahhh-- Finally a meetup for us north bay folks! I'm hoping to make it to this-- will the meeting be held indoors our outside at Bear Republic (hoping outside)?
Awww man, wish I could go. We'll be up in the Lost Sierra (Plumas NF) this weekend. Please keep the North Bay meetups going!
scratch that-- got the dates wrong!
Thanks Ruffrnr! Sounds like we'll need to go with an alternate route that uses the paved exit at the north boundary. Here's what I'm thinking everyone:
Death Valley Alternate Route
We still get to hit saline valley, Eureka Dunen, and Ubehebe Crater-- we'll just end quite a ways north of...
To the 580 convoy crowd-- what time are you guys thinking about leaving? I'm most likely going to be working from home in Marin, but was thinking of bouncing around noon, and camping out at a coffee shop to work remote the rest of the day. Also, any ideas on camping for Thursday night?
I'm not surprised about the snow! We drove from the Bay Area to southern Utah at the end of December, and came back through Death Valley and Tehachapi pass. There was a crazy amount of snow (well over a foot) on Tehachapi at a pretty low elevation from what I recall, seemed like 3500'. I was...
Thanks for the heads up-- I've been keeping an eye on the Death Valley Road Conditions FB page, and even without additional snow, I'm guessing it's a 50/50 chance that Hunter / Saline Valley So Pass will be open. I was actually thinking about alternative routes today, and just finished up two...
Hey guys,
I'm planning to head out from the Bay Area after work. I was hoping to make it down somewhere near/around Bakersfield or Tehachapi pass. I'm in Marin, but I may head out sooner and finish my day working remote the latter half of the day to try and get ahed of the traffic.
Hey guys,
Not sure what the route looks like, but the gate north of Usal Beach is locked during the wet season (until april or may usually). If you're planning to camp at Usal, you'll have to backtrack to the 101, go through Garberville, and take pavement to Shelter Cove before you're back on...
The Death Valley Grand Traverse is set to be a 4 day/3 night adventure, which starts in the south end of the park and snakes its way north, and then eventually west over to Alabama hills for the final night. The route includes hot springs, salt flats, abandoned mines, and ghost towns. All...
Interesting, so it sounds like you were still on military land?? I'm not super familiar with the area, so don't take what I'm saying as the final word-- but last time we were there, they were running active drills within a mile of the LPFS boundary when we left in the morning. I'd be wary of...
Hey PapaDave,
Is that above The Indians area? I think I see one of the old ranches in the valley below in your photos, but hard to tell. I have yet to explore a few of the roads that go up into the mountains there, so curious what's up there.
