Hey, thanks for the kind words about my photos. #10 (if by that you mean the shot with the white pipes and caution tape) was shot in a US Navy cruiser (?) undergoing restoration as a museum piece. I think it was in Michigan. In any case, they let me explore below deck - really cool experience...
Thanks! I actually like the rear bumper and the sill plate design, so I wanted to keep it, plus I get no better of a departure angle if I remove it (due to the exhaust location).
I'd guess my bumper weighs 40 lbs altogether. That said, standing on the back of the car, the suspension compresses...
Haven't commented here in a while, been busy out exploring with the rig, and working on it a bit too:
...and I thought the ADF lift kit install would be my last major project in a while. Hah!
I've wanted a place to store a full size spare, jerry can, and trasharoo (I spend half my...
I develop 4x5 and 120 out of the back of my Subaru on occasion. I shoot professionally, so I demand good results, and I get them. Everything I use can fit in a laundry tub from the dollar store.
My C-41 process is as follow:
- Heat up water to 120F-ish, pour into laundry tub.
- Put dev and...
Well for what it's worth... I've got all the rear bumper dimensions for a Forester SJ that you'd ever want. ;-) Next up is a DIY skidplate, and I'll surely have plenty of useful measurements from that project as well.
Look for a local shop that does CNC/plasma cutting for signs. 0.093" aluminum (the stuff a lot of signs are made out of) would probably do. 0.125" even better. If you can supply your own material and a design, they usually do it for pretty cheap. A 10th of the price of the ADF one. I made some...
Thank you so much for doing this! I have plenty of anaphylactic food allergies myself, which is actually one of the reasons I got into overlanding in the first place, as I can bring all the food I need to bring, with me! I carry a couple Epi's in my first-aid kit and have had to use them a few...
Yup, digging is the key. I even did this with a fair bit of digging and 1 broken board that I didn't get around to replacing yet:
It was about 2-3 ft of mud/clay in the deepest part; so bad that a tractor nearby got bogged down for 5+ hours. Yet these boards - even with 1 broken one - handled...
If you're in need of some ideas, this is what I'm working on now:
Those two plates at either end will fit through holes in the bumper, and then the swing-out will be mounted in double shear, with the plates you currently see resting at the bottom.
Looking at pics of the recovery that broke one of my X-Bull boards, it seems the weakness is if a tire runs over the board while the board cannot be compressed anymore along its width (the side of the board facing outwards from the vehicle is raised on a rock or something, while the side facing...
Yeah, probably hard to tell. I guess the moral of the story is to just look for clues in the reviews as to how hard they used them.
On a related note, in my experience it's the 1 star reviews that have always been the most helpful.
I'd hazard a guess that the RUGCEL ones are the exact same as the Smittybuilt, or possibly the same design (perhaps copied design) but a different type of plastic. That could account for the review discrepancy. One other thing I'd consider, regarding the review discrepancy: Are the people who...
I've been meaning to get those LP guard measurements for a while, just haven't had the time. I'll keep ya posted. What are your thoughts on just removing the bumper beam and bolting something in place of that? Some US manufacturer (Primitive?) sells a winch bumper like that.
Which is why I've considered fabricating my own. Nice as their bumper is, it'd also be fun to have one that's uniquely my own design. While it'd hurt the cost, it'd be nice to see LP make more of their products out of stainless steel - once that powder coat rubs through, the salt on our roads...
Hell, in Canada it's no better. We still get slammed with $100 freight, even if relatively close to Lachute, QC. The cost on top of cost on top of taxes for the front bumper guard is what turned me off it ultimately, though it is nicely built. Not to mention, the conversion rate for USD >CAD is...
Very handy to know, thank you. I'm still not sure if I'm in the "tow your home" or "put your home in your rig and its roof" camp.
On one hand, towing lets you take a larger living space and more stuff with you, plus leave it as your basecamp while you venture out in your vehicle. That said...
This looks amazing! I hope to fabricate something similar for my Forester soon.
@alamocityfoz Consider the Falken Wildpeak AT3W's on my 2018 FXT. I run them for winter offroading (sometimes in snow, sometimes not, but lots of wet ground regardless). They do very well. I love 'em.
