I'm out there quite often.
I leave San Diego (in my 14.5 MPG 2001 4Runner) and I hit Golden Acorn to fill up. It's about $1 per gallon less than the Chevron in Ocotillo.
I only carry extra fuel if I'm planning to hit Fish Creek Wash because it's on the far side for me.. but I've never had to...
Great info!
Here's one from me:
I use these bags to carry firewood in my roof basket. They are really heavyduty, they will carry about 1.5 bundles of grocery store wood and when they are empty, they make great bags to carry my trash outside the rig.
I've been kicking around the idea of setting up the kit for some motorcycle camping / touring. I have some of what I need.. 1 man tent, super small Klymit sleeping pad.
If I do it, I'm sure I'll be posting on OB about it.

Next Challenge: Your rig next to a crazy, way out there sign (like "look, here I am on the Denali Road")
When my girlfriend and I are camping out in my 4Runner, we use one of these:
Double V
It blows up fast with the supplied bag inflator and it packs small. With an extra sleeping bag under us, way comfy.
We also layer in a Harbor Freight moving blanket or 2.
I have not tried it, but I was thinking of monkeying up something with brackets out of the Simpson Strong Tie catalog. They have every imaginable shape and strength. Just add ingenuity and black paint.
