I'm a little late to this thread, but if you are still looking for places to check out, look at Cape Charles. Also, right by the north toll plaza of the CBBT, there's the Eastern Shore of VA Wildlife Refuge, which has a few hiking trails.
The last time I went out there, most of the water hazards were bone dry. It was the only time that I've been there and seen almost no water. Other times, I've seen the water level so high that even going around them involved 4-Low and a bit of luck.
Big Levels is about to close for the season, and won't reopen until April 1st. I don't have a preference for any particular month, rather dates. My work schedule is more or less set in stone, with every other week off.
I always have at least a pistol, with spare magazines with me when I'm off roading. If I'm going to be way out in the boonies for a while, I'll pack a long gun as well.
