To Share or Not to Share (Dispersed Camping)

"Many people enjoy the solitude and primitive experience of camping away from developed campgrounds and other campers." This quote from a USDA Forest Service web-page (Deschutes) sums up the dispersed camping concept for me. If an area was large enough to allow 100 feet of separation with some...

    Chainsaws?

I carry a Stihl MSA 160 with a 12 " bar and two AP300 batteries. Usually have two extra chains and a bottle of bar oil. This saw is light, and does not leak oil or 2 Stroke gas/oil inside the JK. I actually have several battery powered chainsaws. The Greenworks 20312 40V GMax with a 16" bar...

    PNW Bunny Trails

Colockum Road (Colockum Pass) between Ellensberg and Wenatchee is passable. Best way is to start at Ellensberg because the road is easier to find and better signed on that side of the pass.

Are there any recommended smartphone/tablet APPs that will help a person identify planets, stars, objects in the night sky?

    OAT trips

Good to see rain in Texas! What was the smoke about? You have inspired me to get out of the house and take a one day overland trip. Good idea!

    OB Members Map!

New myself; if you look at the buttons on the map you will find that the Points of Interest that you can select to see or not see does not include routes. I am pretty sure you find shared routes in that section of the Forums not on the member map. The Member Map is an evolving benefit it will...

    Air Rifles

I have had several air rifles, I like the Crosman 1077 CO2 the best for general all round plinking. CO2 has some disadvantages but in my mind they are overcome by convenience. The CO2 cartridges are not too expensive when purchased in the larger count boxes, but for sure, they add to the cost...

Anyone on the rivian pre order list?

To answer your original question; yes we are paid reservation holders (11/2018) for the Rivian R1S. We have over 150,000 electric miles of experience and have been active in getting Level 2 and level 3 charging opportunities established in north central Washington. We fully intend to overland...

Add GMRS callsign to profile information?

Just another thought. Because HAM call signs are different than GMRS call signs we could just put our GMRS call sign in the HAM call sign field. All the licensed HAM operators will know that it is a GMRS call sign and ignore it. Most of us "licensed by rule" GMRS users won't know the...

Add GMRS callsign to profile information?

I too would appreciate this option. HAM is great if you want to send data, organize a search and rescue mission in another state or talk to someone in Chile. GMRS is simple, effective and inexpensive comms for vehicle to person or vehicle to vehicle use.

    Overlanding with "stock" 4X4

With a heads up driver; the only modifications needed for many 4X4 vehicles would be tires and shackle points. Edit: 4X4 Defined; vehicle equiped with a transfer case capable of Low-range (4-LO) operation. All Wheel Drive specifically excluded.

    Another HAM vs GMRS question

Our newly installed Midland MXT275 is connected to a Midland MXTA26 antenna via a MXTA25 cable. I used the old CB antenna mount hole on the spare tire carrier. We have not trail tested this set up but have done a walk away test where Charlene walked while I sat in the JK. In a fairly urban...

    Another HAM vs GMRS question

The little booklet included with the MXT275 talks about repeaters and the channels associated with them. How do split tones and wideband vs narrowband impact use of repeaters? I am not likely to every use a repeater but would be interested in knowing.

    Another HAM vs GMRS question

I have been getting familiar with the MXT275 I installed in my JK yesterday. It seems to be a very competent radio. We have not "range checked" it yet with Motorola T600s but for sure the communications are clear and carry no static artifacts as the TC button is released. One area that needs...

    GMRS Radio!

I just purchased the Midland MXT275 with a MXTA26 antenna and MXTA24 cable. I am hoping that the mounting will fit the Teraflex HD Hinged Carrier mounting holes. I specifically like the controls being in the hand unit and the ability to mount the base unit under the seat. The 4X4 club we...

US Northwest June 2020 WABDR - Washington Backcountry Discovery Route

We live on the east side of the Cascades, about mid-state. Let me know as you approach the Cascades and we will offer some suggestions. There are many hundreds of miles of decently maintained Forest Service Roads that you will enjoy.

    Another HAM vs GMRS question

Thanks for providing the technical details of what can be accomplished via HAM radio. The "repeater" issue is interesting. I tapped MyGMRS.com and found the attached map which is not all inclusive but does show a lack of repeaters. Those listed seem to be operated by individuals or clubs...

    Another HAM vs GMRS question

I have been considering this topic for a few months now. My 4X4 club (Trail Seekers, Wenatchee, WA) is heavy on HAM because the founder is a HAM enthusiast and promoter. I have yet to understand the disadvantages of GMRS. There are 22 discrete channels of GMRS with 8 of them authorized for...

    Another HAM vs GMRS question

The GMRS license is $7 a year. payable in 10 year increments; meaning that you pay for 10 years at a time which is $70. It allows multiple family users and GMRS Radios which means those covered can each operate their own radio.

I am planning a trip from Michigan to Seattle along i90, Tips?

No matter how you travel it, the central prairie is just that, prairie. You will gain an appreciation for those who made the trip in wagon trains. One route you might find of interest is to travel on I94 West to Glendive, MT. then take Hwy 200N and Hwy 13 to join Highway 2 West. Following Hwy...
