The answer to this question is based on each individual needs. Just had a couple of friends finish 9 months in South America with only a small drawer fridge while I have another extended travel friend that carries a fridge and a freezer. Both are happy with there set up and it works for them...
If I need light I have a red LED strip and a white LED strip on my hatch both are dimmable. I also use a dimmable LED strip on my awning.
I prefer to operate by moon light as much as possible for less bugs and better night vision but if I need light I have it.
You want your recovery gear to be rated 3-4 times your vehicles weight
Pick the correct recovery method -
Kinetic rope ~30% stretch
Kinetic strap ~20% stretch
Tow strap O stretch
I carry all of the above and keep the Yellow tow strap (see below) and a D ring available for quick access...

For me its all about reliability and versatility and a factory mechanical Toyota Land Cruiser works. It can lift an axle high enough to easily change a 37" tire and it will work in any position every time. Coupled with a Jack Adapter and you have a high level of safety for a repair or tire...
With our RRT or pulling the popup trailer we achieved almost the same MPG. The difference for me was the Land Cruiser handled the popup much better at speed than the RTT.
