I had the same questions. Started a year-long information journey to see if I could find honest and practical answers. The only thing that was clear, from the beginning, was that it was a sensitive subject. That, in itself, told me a lot.
Ultimately, for me...Nay.
Can you adventure and have a great time camping in a 2wd vehicle? Absolutely. Should you invest in permanent modifications and features for that vehicle (lifts, racks, etc)? I don't think I would, if I had the mind to change to something else. Objectively speaking, the 4x4 can get you into...
I used a silicon filter drip for a while, then a percolator. Both were ok. Probably preferred the filter. But then I switched to Starbucks via packets and haven't looked back. They just work too well, make a good cup of coffee, weigh nothing, take up no space, and require only hot water. So...
I love when definitely is misspelled as "defiantly" and it makes the sentence even better than than the original. It happens on offroad/camping forums a lot:
1. We defiantly preferred to run 35s on our Tacoma
2. Many people had defiantly been past the road-closed sign before us
3. The...
So that I don't get taken the wrong way. I would absolutely LOVE a Disco I/II, and have spent many many hours drooling over them on craigslist. For me, I think they may be one of the best looking SUVs ever created (aesthetically). I could still see myself getting one, but they are so very...
Finding good 4runners and Tacomas is especially challenging. That's the mode I was in when I found my Jeep. I wish you good luck, and would love to hear how the search is going (my search was about 6 months).
Perhaps you should be considering the 4runners. They have the benefit of being reliable over number of years/generations. Such that your budget can simply slide you up and down the years (more budget = newer). Obviously, I'm an XJ person right now, but a 4runner is never far from my mind.
Hi Vince, you might want to mention whether you do your own vehicle work or not. For older SUVs like Cherokees and Discos that can matter quite a bit. Even an XJ, for which parts are highly available and generally dirt cheap, can send a person to the poor house if they take it into the shop...
In general, I really like the layout of that bumper. But I can totally see why you don't like the corners. They are far too high, and are disturbing the otherwise nice lines of the front of the vehicle. I would bet that you could tell a fab shop (or yourself) that you want the corners...
I plan on doing this with my boys to help add some reasons to get outside, and to give some purpose to some of the adventure/exploration drives I take them on (which is typically me scouting for future campsite possibilities). I don't care if it has jumped the shark. I always seem to find out...
I'm planning on bringing my 8yo boy (just turned). He may flip-flop, and I'm just easing him into the outdoor life, so I won't force him...but so far he is in. I'm trying to talk my 6yo into it as well, but he has been a "no" so far. But he also tends to do whatever his brother does, so we'll...
We went to Hunts Pond, near New Berlin, NY. We had intended to do the first night there (Friday), and then make our way to Cherry Ridge at Charles E. Baker State Forest (just North of New Berlin) for Saturday night. The snow was still pretty significant that weekend, and we had cleared about 3...
If you want to get the most value for the money, then let the choices emerge naturally from necessity. By that, I mean go camping and exploring with the basics, and then let the real needs emerge (based on your style, and your destinations). Instead of buying a bunch of suggestions up front...
The adventures you create will be far more important than the vehicle. Once you chalk them up, they can never be taken away. Many avid explorers/campers get a long with less than a Traverse.
Central New York here.
Thanks to Hank Outdoors, OB is starting to gel in this area. I have met several members now. We are heading out this weekend for a 2 nighter (yes the weather is still miserable..but you can't wait on warm around here).
I have a CB and a Baofeng handheld in the Jeep, and also got my HAM license. I put a magnetic 2m antenna up for the handheld and a 3 ft. firefly firestik for the CB. Covers a lot of bases, most the guys on the trail are CB (which I prefer due to ease of use, legality, accessibility to all, and...
Just use wikipedia to look up the General Mobile Radio Service. It gives a lot of information about GMRS and FRS as well as their frequencies.

After installing the emblem, spray it with Fluid Film, and wipe off the excess. It will stay protected for a good long while. I have rotors out next to my house that I set up as a test 1.5 years ago, and the one I treated is still beading up when it rains. The one I did not treat is severely...
