Subscribed, in a similar position to OP, and I've been wondering some of the same things.
Big thing I've noticed is that the guys who actually spend significant time offroad with their rigs seem to have MUCH less lighting than the mall crawlers out there. Similar to your approach laid out...

Dobinsons suspension with heavy duty LT rear
Just picked it up from the alignment this afternoon, it rides great.

Short answer is probably so, with a few qualifications. 3rd gen 4runners are probably the most popular, and some would say the most bullet proof generation of 4runner out there. That said, they did have a few issues, just some stuff you should check before getting into one. I'm not super...
Well, the 4runner is still sitting at the shop getting the post-lift alignment, so I honestly haven't had much time for any drivetrain issues to surface yet. Only driven it once to the alignment shop. That said, I did UCA's, diff drop (even though the necessity of a diff drop is much disputed...
Same here. It was a great setup.
I’ve gone taller on my ‘03 4runner with a 3” dobinsons lift. But I’m honestly not sure if I’m going to up my tire size at all. That setup with the 265’s always worked super well for me.

One of my favorite places too. Only been once, did a 4 day backpacking trip in the back country. If you can get a permit and get out there for a day or so, do it. IMO some of the most amazing places out there are only accessible by foot or horseback.
Also, going to the sun road is worth...
Sorry man just now saw this. I ended up actually installing half of my dobinsons suspension saturday and sunday. Now i'm still in the middle of wrapping it up, and down 1 vehicle until I do, so I don't have a ton of extra time. If you need some help in mid July though, I should have my T4R...
Oh no. There’s so much more out there! My experience with those style tools is that they barely form a usable edge.
I have a range of Japanese wet stones, a couple of diamond plates, and a couple of homemade leather strops. In my opinion, the best field setup is simply having well sharpened...
I know that cycle well.
I’ve had my complete dobinsons suspension sitting in my garage for the past 2 months. 1st month I was building a shop. 2nd month I was managing a new location buildout for work, then opening that location.
I haven’t done much in the way of “fun work” lately.

Where is that located? Cost?
I have a carport but I’ve always wanted a place I could stage a bigger job on my 4runner if the weather was supposed to be bad that weeekend or something like that.

Worst things I’ve purchased:
“Professional” installation of my old Tacoma’s lift. I got impatient and paid a random shop I didn’t know anything about to install it. They did a bad job. I should have done my homework and chosen a vetted, reliable shop, or waited and done it myself.
Literally...
I would definitely roll by a meetup for a while. My schedule is hard to nail down in the summer, but if a meetup is organized and I'm available that day, I'd be there.
Purely my opinion here. But for me, AC has always been the differentiating factor between “inside” and “outside”. Granted I have high tolerance for heat and humidity. But I firmly believe more long term comfort is gained from embracing the heat instead of fighting it.
I realize most of what we...
Yeah man! Good luck...wish I could offer to help you out myself. But it’s my busy season, I’ve put in 40 hours just from Tuesday to Thursday, working all weekend, and I’ve got a honey do list at home as long as my arm.
But. Message me if you have any questions or issues. We’ve been in San...
I had some work done by 4x4 source a year or so ago. Literally the worst experience I’ve ever had at a garage. Unprofessional, took twice as long as promised, didn’t communicate well, and they played dumb after breaking an abs sensor while installing my lift. I could not ever recommend them. My...
PINS sounds much more promising than I expected. That’s really great.
In addition, I’ve found this “hill country tour” route that’s just public dirt roads and a few stream crossings going through the hill country. Made me realize that Texas has a ton of dirt backroads, and while they normally...
