Spent the weekend in Death Valley with the 80. Coming back, it's like Christmas. Body is coming off the frame in a couple of weeks.

Hey guys. In Death Valley working with the rangers and Overland Bound bordering the race track so people will not drive over. Currently sunset over Lippincott with spotty network. Will be back on line early next week.

I managed to remove the rear bumper. Who in the right mind would WELD the bumper to the frame. To remove welded parts from the frame I cut it off about 1” away from the weld, then score it with a cutting wheel 1/8” from the weld and pry it off bending back and forth. After that I used a...

Building a home in a 80 series Landcruiser

PVC pipes worked great. I just wanted more efficient use of the space and being round tubes they used only 70% of the volume. We had them for 3 years, 60K miles and they never failed. In fact I think they perform better then stainless.

So with the bigger tanks (12.5 gal) in very cold weather (20F) our heat exchange can not keep up and bring the water to 140F when driving because of the wind factor. Tank is insulated with 1/4” mini cell foam. Once we stop it tops temperature in 10 minutes while the engine still running. So...

Cut the hump to accommodate for the shifters that moved back because of the longer 5 speed. Also came today from Grass Valley. Picked up front and rear 4x4Labs bumper kits. Some assembly required!

Todays progress was figuring out the drivetrain fit in the frame and body. I marked on the hump how much metal to remove. TC could not fit because the fuel tank is in the way. It will have to move back a few inches. Also found that the cross bar needs to be cut and moved back. Probably hang the...

Picked up yesterday a refreshed H151 5 speed from Valley Hybrids in Stockton after a spa and massage (synchros, bearings and the works). Thanks Georg!!! I won the lottery having friends like this! Borrowed a TC as a mockup to install on the frame. Meanwhile Valley Hybrids are rebuilding mine...

Will take a while. Need to bring the rig to 'spec' and only then build the camper. Should not take very long the last part because I already know roughly what we want. Be similar to the 80, but with an hydronic heater for space and water, and probably a diesel stove. Backup small propane for...

Some engine work this weekend. Bottom End Bearings were replaced. Oil pan is going to the paint shop for BK208 black powder coating. The bearings were not seriously worn. Good news I guess. It is so easy when the engine is up side down. You only hope not to drop something in and forget...

Spent a few hours making the brackets for the seats. Once all metal parts are done, they will be powder coated. Also ordered new leather skins in gray for the seats and heat pads.

Just got a pair of BMW E46 sport manual seats on craigslist for $300. I'll remove the air bags and install new leather skins. Also add seat warmers. This week, I'll build the brackets on the body to support these seats.

Today we located the frame engine mounts. Took a while because the driver side is not a 70 series mount so needed a spacer under in order to set the engine level. It's hard to commit, so only tack welded. Left less then 1" between the firewall and the engine. Waiting for the H151...

Frame body mounts came in today from Japan. We placed them with blue painters tape. Maybe add some epoxy to make it stronger.... This weekend will put the 1HDT in place and actually locate them in the exact location to leave 20mm space to the firewall and 3 degrees nose up.

Frame is ready for the new engine mounts. Once I settle the engine, Body goes to a shop for repair.

So, had a few hours to spare and managed to get some progress. Engine is out, and body is stripped from everything outside. Body mounts are disconnected so I am trying to find a way to lift it and put it on a trailer to go to the body shop. A few little things attached on the inside...

Building a home in a 80 series Landcruiser

Hey Brandon, Thanks. Ladder was home made. 1/2” steel pipe bent. The rungs are 1/8”x2” steel bar. I drilled holes in the rear bumper and welded 8mm nuts so I can attach ‘stuff’. Cost $15.

This project has matured. We are very happy with the results and the dynamic list of improvements is empty. We are moving to our next built. A HJ75 Landcruiser Troopy. We enjoyed doing the build and using the rig. We have lived in it on long and short trips for about 120 days since the...
