Nope; the state beach is surrounded by the base, but is state land, not federal.
Being The People's Republic of California there may be other restrictions in place, but I can't speak to that since I didn't bring my firearms while I was stationed there.
The San Onofre State Beach campground is open to the public, and very close by. It's a regular paved campground, so even less "overlandy", but I spent many nights there during my last year on Pendleton (I was living in a camper full time) and it was pretty amazing. Stay on the cliffs side...
Who's going?
A buddy and I started planning this week, wondering if anyone else here is planning on going and would like to meet up with or travel along with us along the way.
Our tentative plan is to leave West Michigan on the morning of May 8 and haul the mail south to the Trans-America...
Kitch-Iti-Kipi (Palms Brook State Park) is an awesome experience. I went last summer when I was in the UP for my family reunion in Rapid River (Rapid River Knife Works is worth checking out, since you mentioned Bark River), and it was PACKED; took about 45 minutes to get through the line and on...
Unfortunately I've had some things come up as well. I'm going to try to make it to KOAR still, but if I do it's going to be a flying trip there and back.
Plus side is in going to try to use the vacation time I'm saving to get out to Expo West next year...
I wouldn't call that weird at all; encouraging preparedness is a good thing, in my opinion.
I just wonder if that's in the scope of OB's future growth planning; wouldn't be a bad thing if it is, but developing and implementing the standards, curriculum, and other logistics associated with such...
In the right circumstances I could see labeling location of potentially life-saving items being useful, but as @Jedi mentioned, theft is a serious concern for those of us who DD our trucks, or when venturing into urban areas.
Seems like the easiest way to address that would be to print the...
Not sure if this is the right sub-forum to discuss RTTs, but since they attach to vehicles and don't get left at base camp, here goes.
Member @Yota 4X4 started a thread about the hard shell truck topper Go Fast Camper recently, but I didn't want to clutter that up with chit chat about their...
They aren't cheap, that's for sure.
However, relative to other similar options they are comparable or lower priced.
I've seen a couple of additional companies coming to market recently with offerings similar to the AT habitat, so competition is growing, which can only be good for us consumers.
Man, now I'm sad I didn't make it up to the rally, looks like you had a great time.
Rad Frankensubi, also. A friend of mine has one just like it (rusted all to hell and having apart). I'll have to show him your handiwork and see if I can convince him to Mad Max it up a bit.
I've been following them on social media for a few months, very cool stuff.
I've got an FJ Cruiser, so they prototype RTT they recently unveiled is what has my attention currently. Depending on where pricing shakes out that may be getting added to my to do list.
Attached are a couple of...
I think the best approach is to establish preferred channel /freqs for each platform, rather than try to proselytize and convert everyone to a certain platform. I'd wager that people will convert once they see how much better things are, without being beaten over the head with it.
I have CB...
For those who might be interested in saving some dough, I picked up one of the older, lower powered MXT90 (5 watts) Midland GMRS radios at my local Wally-World for $25 last night. Another location nearby had several on shelf, also on clearance, so you might be able to get one of these pretty...
That's a good question.
I am tentatively planning on taking that whole week off, plus the following Monday, but I don't have specific plans at this point, aside from the event.
Seems like an ideal opportunity to get together, though.

Hi Josh, Welcome!
There are a handful of OB members in/around West Michigan; I happen to be in Muskegon Currently.
Go check in on the Any Fellow Michigander? thread in the regional sub-forum. Read through that thread, you'll find a semi-active FB group for the Mitten, as well.
I'm putting...
Let us know what you think of the Lenovo tablet, if you don't mind.
I've switched over to Motorola (Lenovo) phones from Samsung recently and been very pleased with them; much less bloatwear and simpler, more purely Android UI, which I like. I'm wondering if the same holds true with tablets.
As long as your tablet has a decent internal GPS and sufficient storage, I don't think the specific model really matters all that much.
I have an older Galaxy Note 8.0 (with S-Pen). I originally bought it for taking notes in college a few years back, which it was great for, but recently I've...
