The other wild thought is...Livin Lite makes (or used to) make a slide in pickup bed camper. Weighed like 450#, pretty minimalistic, a couple fold out beds, dinette and a couple power outlets. I have seen folks buy them and mate them to a trailer. So...you *could* find a pickup bed that's...
Well, this isn't the Apache rebuild I was thinking of...but...here's a nice write up by someone who used a 1966 Apache Raven tent camper for $400 and gave it a 2nd life as an offroad camping trailer.

If you have a pickup, you could look at a Flip-Pac camper shell:
Or...and I can't find the picture now...but...there was someone who took a retro Apache Eagle camper, and mated the camper to a Off Road trailer base. Came out awesome, and I think only had $2k-3k into the entire package.
I actually think the Livin Lite Jeep Extreme Trail Edition would be a passable off-road camper. Now...could you drag it through the Rubicon? Probably not...but its welded aluminum and has a full skid plate protecting the axle and everything else. They've even equipped it so your Jeep spare...
I'm a bit torn honestly. If I had to guess, my Commander will head off to college with my daughter in 18 mos. (Mine does not have the QD2, only the QT2 package.) So while its great in winter in the city, etc...its not the full off road drivetrain with a front locker.
We'll see. She'd like a...
I had the thought of using the stakes to support a rack w/RTT. That way, I could still have a 'regular' trailer when I needed one, or drop the rack & RTT on it and be off. That's a ways off though.
I posted this in the Rigs/Trailer section...but I just picked up this trailer today. It has some nice potential. Its a 1949 Supreme Off Road trailer. Thinking its the perfect jumping off point for an overland camping trailer.
I picked up this 1949 Supreme Off Road trailer this morning for $800.00. My intention was to use it as is, but...it does have some nice steel stake holders that could support a rack & RTT, and with a 3500# axle, should hold it fine too.
All original except for the tires, paint & wiring.
Nice video! I'm surprised you had to remove the factory roof rails. I guess that's my only real disappointment with the end result? I'm sure it was necessary to get it to bolt together...but that's too bad. (Though I suppose if you're concerned about clearance issues...that's a plus.)...
I'd just like to see how it fits...the Commander (as you know) isn't super popular for aftermarket support, so anything that fits good & looks good is nice to find.
Plus, I might pick up the Mt. Thielsen from CVT as a 'starter' RTT, so I'd need a rack up there, or at the very least mounts for it.
I had one when the kids were little. Great vans, AWD, power, legroom, dutch doors out back. Loved it. Mine seemed to leak from every seal & gasket possible...but...it ran great!
How about a Cherokee? 5-Speed though...

Actually, there are a ton of nice Cherokee's on the Des Moines CL right now.
