Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 as an overland vehicle?

Hello there, I am looking to get into overlanding. I live in the UK. I have been looking at the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 as a potential vehicle. You can get a nice tidy example with between 100,000 - 125,000 miles for under 10k. I would be looking at an automatic 3.0 D4D model. I want to...

Solo Trip to taughannock falls and watkins glen NY

Another trip straight out of a dream This beautiful drive in campsite is only 8 minutes from the astonishing Watkins Glen State Park gorge. While this is my 4th time coming here, it is the first time I had the great pleasure of experiencing Taughannock Falls. While the natural beauty of...

Mr. Buddy Heater Question - Outdoor Use, Dispersed Camping

...it is a radiant, directional heat if the Mr. Buddy heaters are good for outdoor use in wind. I was miserable half the time trying to stay warm and would easily be happy bringing a Mr. Buddy and leaving the Ignik at home in the cooler months. PS - No intent on using this inside a tent or camper.

    Before you Buy Rooftop Tent

Great point about hardshell RTT's and facing the shell into the wind. That's something you definitely cannot do in a ground tent. I really think what's happened in the overlanding world is a bunch of people have massively overblown RTT's by acting as if, or maybe even flat out saying, you MUST...

    Before you Buy Rooftop Tent

...And in a wind I have got up in the dark to turn the rig into the wind which really calms down the flapping which would be way worse in a ground tent. I can also sleep inside my rig, but that needs maybe 10 minutes to reposition some bins. Truthfully I could lose the rtt and sleep inside. They...

    Advice

take the one you are most comfortable with. either of the three will hold a few totes and support using a car tent or just a regular tent. my step daughter had a jeep sahara and recently traded it in on a forester and likes it better for fuel economy and a smoother ride, so the subarus are a...

Build ideas/suggestions for my 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X

You are right about that!! I am amazed at what some of the equipment costs. I saw a pair of handles for sale that attach to the side of a roof rack sell for $200…. Two hundred dollars for two handles… I think I will hold off on the RTT for a bit to see if it would be worth it for my needs.

Good advice. With the money some people spend on modifications before getting out and about you could drive to Patagonia! re RTTs - we've used one only once - 5 weeks in Iceland on a rental 4x4. The cost of shipping our own vehicle would have been ridiculous so rental was the best option. It...

I haven't been active on this site for a long time but plan to step up. I noticed you have an Xterra. I have had some highly modified rigs in the past, but recently purchased a 2011 Xterra Pro-4X and love it. I plan to replace the springs and shocks but with only a moderate lift. Love the rig so...

New to truck and overloading....ready to get started!

...views on the forum. My offer - keep it simple; don't assume that you need something until know why. With a vehicle, appropriate tyres, a tent (ground or RTT) or a bed in the back, you could drive to Patagonia with little problem (I've seen a Canadian Windstar in Argentina - spare wheel tied...

What is the last thing you bought and plan to buy?

...here :-) Except that there are some issues that shouldn't be on a new vehicle - notice the beautiful plastic bag to cover the back door - I am happy with it. We already did a few trips (e.g., to Acadia NP) and it is quite an upgrade to my Roof Top Tent ... Which I still have and intend to use.

...I have seen quite a few Xterras all kitted out and was amazed what you are able to do with them. You’re right about the truck top tents. The more I think about them the more I realize that the older I get the harder it will be to get down from it! Plus, I already have a 2, 4, and 6-man...

Love the D41! As far as mods, you really don't need much. Good tires is about it. Get a quick pitch tent, or a swag, and just use basic camping gear. I wouldn't recommend modding the vehicle until you start encountering obstacles that you can tackle. Carry a decent toolkit, a few spare parts...
