Going back to a Full Size for my Overlanding

Progress continues. Ride height-ish: Dumped: Bed trimming is done now, but wasn't done as-of those pics. -TJ

    Overlanding with an EV

Yet another way to think about it... torque is the vector cross-product of the radius and force vectors. Horsepower is simply a mathematical derivation based on torque and RPM (Horsepower = Torque x RPM / 5,252). A transmission transmits HP/TQ to the rest of the drivetrain (whether that means...

    Overlanding with an EV

Is that a scientific definition, or an idiom? If we take "inverter" to mean the thing that both provides, and meters current to the electric motor, is it not far more similar to a throttle body than a transmission? The actual force that drives an EV is never transmitted through the inverter...

    Overlanding with an EV

No, the inverter in and of itself does not change wheel speed in an EV. As you correctly stated, the inverter inverts DC to AC in order to provide power to the electric motor(s). That said, the speed controller does control motor speed/output in an EV speed, and is often packaged with or...

    Overlanding with an EV

Meh, I'm mostly a jerk. ;) The point I was trying to make; for the sake of the community at large, is that an inverter isn't a transmission. It seems pretty clear that my mistake was a typo, nothing more. My intent in responding repeatedly to the OP is that it's not all that cool to...

    Overlanding with an EV

You are 1000% right. I don't know everything, and I also make mistakes. If you read my whole post, you'll see I pointed out that EV motors are AC, and their battery packs are DC. I made a mistake in typing up my response when I said the inverter is there to convert AC into DC. Again, if you...

    Overlanding with an EV

Also not actually true. All modern EVs run AC motors. All modern EVs have DC battery packs. The inverter is there to... invert AC to DC. Generally the "speed control" is also handled by the "inverter" so it's more than just an inverter. But it I completely agree: it's not a transmission at...

    Overlanding with an EV

Dude, it's not "as I call it." EVs have transmissions as the manufacturers themselves call it.. It's a transmission, period. It (are you ready for this) transmits the power from the motor to the axles, period. Also, you clearly don't understand how transmissions work in an ICE either. Can...

    Overlanding with an EV

How in the world is an inverter a transmission? Do you know what an inverter is, or does? I don't think you understand EVs very well. Almost all EVs have a transmission (by the definition of what a transmissions is) and yes some are multi-speed (Taycans for example have a 2-speed). A very...

    Overlanding with an EV

ORLY? Every current EV I can think of has a transmission, or transmissions of some sort. Rivians actually have two transmissions... -TJ

    first timer questions

Are you dead-set on that rig? My truck with FWC weighs around 10k lbs and I'm already always the heaviest rig in my group/that I see out on the trail. At 25k lbs I imagine we're talking about a large ex-military rig? It looks like you're in the Rockies, are you sure something that heavy is...

    Overlanding with an EV

I have several friends with Rivians, including one that has the S and the T who tows pretty regularly with them. What he tows is nowhere near 11k lbs (~2800lbs sand rail on an open trailer... figure ~5-6k lbs total) and his range is drastically reduced, half or worse. I'm not an EV or Rivian...

    Overlanding with an EV

Going back to a Full Size for my Overlanding

Not really sure, we'll cycle it the best we can fully hooked up to try to get real-world numbers (not some theoretical number it can't actually achieve configured how I'll use it) that said, it's not a "long travel" setup by any means. The front coil over is being changed to a 12" travel...

Any 8.1 GMT800 Suburban owners in here?

Re-bumping this old thread, thanks for your reply! I haven't picked the rig up yet, but it seems like the seller is finally tired of it just sitting so I may get it soon. Great info, and if I do get it I'll PM you to find out what I need to know/look out for. -TJ

Going back to a Full Size for my Overlanding

It's definitely a tight fit, but it's the only bumper for these trucks I like... I mean really it's the only one I found I didn't haaate and it just turns out I actually like it. I'll probably end up doing their rear bumper eventually too. Hopefully the Kelderman ride won't change over time...

2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Build

Little update: THE 426CUI GEN III HEMI STARTED!!!!! ...kinda. We've been having a hell of a time getting HP Tuners to play nice with the overall setup (2005 Ram computer, custom Hotwire harness, early Gen III Hemi, 545RFE). It's still complaining about an unsupported VIN, even though it...
