Read about a similar problem on another 2000 on cherokeeforums.com They ended up replacing the distributer that the cam sensor sits on . Something about the wear in the gear causing excessive movement. `` If that is the problem, you would need a scan tool synchronize the cam and crank sensors...

It is an 88 also. Great ride. Last month I had engine failure in the Capitan mountains in NM though. :confused:

Im not familiar with that particular area but the Mark Twain does have many good trails. Best bet is to look on Gaia or onX for public use forest service roads in that area.
