Why not get your license? If you find a web page that creates tests out of the pool of questions, you can keep taking the tests until you consistently pass. It takes about a weekend. Then you can join in on different nets such as the Overland Ham Radio Net.
I've done this with Google maps. I figure out how many hours or miles I want to be on the road and then search for sleeping locations near my proposed end.
You should look into getting the Midland 6dB antenna. I live about 3 miles from work and often have my 275 scanning as I'm driving and can often hear a conversation on simplex pretty much the whole way home.
