    Stanislaus NF, mostly closed

Happy to share info. In hindsight, I should have called the Summit Ranger Station (209.965.3434) before heading up, but there's still a lot of easy camping up there.

    Stanislaus NF, mostly closed

Planned to take the family dispersed camping over the Memorial Day Weekend. We usually go in to Stanislaus around Long Barn or Strawberry/Pinecrest. The roads in those areas are still closed. The rangers said that there's still quite a bit of snow piled up. Some of it was visible from the...

US West Quick Corral Hollow/ Sourgrass Weekend Trip

That was a great trip. Thanks for putting it together, Jeff! Strangely relaxing to bump and crawl over those rocks and see the beautiful sights. Here's a pic of the Corral from Corral Hollow. I need steadier hands for those pano shots (and a cleaner lens).

PSA: Low branches in the springtime

That's a pretty bad outcome. I hope you have him on a keychain now. Or review mirror decoration.

PSA: Low branches in the springtime

Lagniappe is definitely a "bonus or gift". In this context, "surprise" and "oh sh*t" are also fitting. Look, I can handle the crawlies if I know they're coming, but picking spiders and critters out of my hair while I'm trying to drive is asking a lot. That bee was bonus. Welcome to...

PSA: Low branches in the springtime

I've been busy lately between intense work and family responsibilities (driving a kid to skating practice at 6am). I needed a quick break so I went to our local 4x4 park for some therapeutic driving (Hollister OHV). It was a beautiful spring day, sunny and only lightly breezy. I had the top...

Fern Canyon will require permits from May 1 - Sep 30 (news article). I went there for the first time last year with PapaDave on the Lost Coast trip. Awesome experience! Crawled out of my tent in the morning to see an elk staring right at me, chewing. Big f*cker.

Yep Post BS Thread Goes Away.

I'll start by saying that the overlanding community, as big as it is now, is a small fraction of the total driving population. And as awesome as OB is, if you're reading this forum, you are part of an even more exclusive segment. So anyone who comes here has a lot in common. I read at least...

How do you transport your fishing rod?

Hello Chris. I'll send you a PM. Hali were good to us last year. I've never fished for sturgeon. I heard it's more beer drinking than catching. :)

How do you transport your fishing rod?

I'm in a 4-door jeep. I ocean fish from my kayak regularly (almost weekly during the summer) and carry the rods with their butts in the front seat, with the tips going backwards towards the passenger area. I can carry rods up to 6' 6" this way (or 2pc 8' 6" salmon rods broken down). I've...

    Suggestions on kayak/roof rack solutions

I've been using a Rhino Rack system with removable feet for 2 years now. I usually carry a tandem Hobie (85lbs), but have carried a second single Hobie for relatively short distances (25 miles). I believe that system is rated for 150lbs of dynamic weight. I like the removable system because...

proper cargo tie down on roof rack

Yup, that's the technique for kayaks.
