Rally Point Details:
This will be a mild offroad adventure south of Mesquite, Nevada to the edge of Lake Mead, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The toughest part of the route is rated a 4/10, but has been run with a Toyota Highlander, so that rating is likely inflated. The route is 313 miles (side trips extra), so carrying additional fuel is a must. It isn’t practical to pre-scout the route, so bear with us, be flexible and willing to make changes. We will start at the last point for fuel, the Flying J truck stop, exit 118 on Interstate 15 on Sunday the 30th at 3:00pm Pacific Time Zone (36.78301, -114.14028). Places of note along the way are as follows:
Falling Man Petroglyphs
Little Finland rock formations
Seven Keyholes slot canyon
Ghost town of Gold Butte
Scanlon Ferry/Lake Mead
Garden of Eden Slot Canyon
Oak Grove Historic Cabin
Historic Pine Ranch
Kelly Point overlook of the Grand Canyon
Eureka, Windmill, Gold Butte, Nevada, Hilltop, Grand Gulch, Lime Kiln mines
Some of the sites will involve some hiking or scrambling on rocks. Four Wheel drive is needed for this trip, though likely only occasionally. Most areas do not allow wood campfires but allow propane fire pits. There are multiple marked designated camp sites as well as dispersed camping along the route on a first come-first served basis. There are no camping permits, fees, or reservations needed so long as you don't descend into the Grand Canyon to camp. There is little to no call phone coverage on these routes. I don’t want to give everything away, but kids and adults will love exploring the slot canyons, mines, and history of these sites. Eat when you want, camp where you want, and take as much or as little time as you need. It is recommended having HAM long-distance communication or stay with the group. Watch out for venomous creatures and be well prepared. Have a method of collecting and disposing of your waste, don’t count on having vault toilets. Be sure to adhere to the requirements of the BLM, National Monuments, and Grand Canyon National Park. Please check the mapping files for route and historical information.
