Rally Point Details:
Easy going family oriented trip to Usal Beach and North Coast Redwoods. Suitable for most vehicles with reasonable ground clearance. Friday is meetup and travel to Usal Beach. Campfire Friday night on the beach if the weather is cooperative, or more sheltered if windy/rainy. Campsites on the beach itself may be quite sandy and require appropriate capability/gear, but there are many campsites up from the beach that are easier to navigate. Winds can pick up overnight, so those camping on the beach should be well anchored or large enough to not blow away. Saturday there will be an optional day trip with destinations based on group interest. Potential activities include hiking the ghost redwoods or up to the beach overlook (see pic above), visiting the State Parks nature center, hiking among the notable redwoods in one of the many groves, driving down onto the South Fork of the Eel River, visiting the picturesque town of Ferndale, eating at the logging camp dining hall in Samoa, searching for the tallest tree in the world (a Sequoia sempervirens named Hyperion) and many, many others. Saturday night will be back at Usal Beach. Self-guided departure for home on Sunday. 2-Apr-2024: Event updated with .gpx file of key locations.

- In my mind I am always at a remote high-elevation lake surrounded by snowcapped peaks.
