Rally Point Details:
We are family of 4, so this will be a family oriented trip and kids are welcome. We will be mostly following the Overland Trail Guides Route called the Death Valley Adventure Route.
Avg Trail Rating: 2-3
Typical Terrain: A mixture of dirt, sandy, and some rocky trails that require 4 low. The most difficult section is Dedeckera Canyon*** however, we will be using a bypass that travels just west of the canyon. We will be going through the mildly technical trails at Lippincott and Cerro Gordo. These trails are not necessarily technical, but they are steep sided and narrow.
Recommended Vehicle and tires: High clearance SUV or truck with 4-wheel drive (not AWD) and 4-low gearing. All terrain tires with full size spare.
Since Death Valley is a National Park there is a park fee of $30 per vehicle.
This is my first rally point and first time in Death Valley. All are welcome. And if you are familiar with the area, please feel free to give some tips and pointers or better yet, come with us!
I am coming from central CA and will begin my trip at 5am Monday, April 18th. We should be able to complete the trip and all be home by Saturday night for a total of 6 days and 5 nights.
Itinerary:
On day one we will be meeting in the ghost town of Ballarat. You will need to fuel up before you get there. There are gas stations in Indian Wells and Ridgecrest. I should be in Ballarat by noon for lunch and to meet up with everyone. You are more than welcome to arrive around noon, but I'm setting the official meet up time for 1pm. We will leave Ballarat around 2pm or so after a quick driver’s meeting to start driving to our first camp. We will head south to get to Coyote Canyon Rd. Then we will head east through Goyer Canyon before eventually heading north towards our first camp site, The Stone Cabin, aka the Geologist's Cabin. If the Cabin is taken there are other sites we can easily get to nearby.
On day two after breakfast, we will head out toward Badwater Basin and we will stop around there to check it all out. Then we can check out Artist’s Palette, Dante’s View, Furnace creek, etc. before heading to camp. Night two will be spent at Hole in the Wall.
Day three we will head up to Chloride and then Beatty to top off the tanks. After that we can hit up Rhyolite Ghost Town before making our way toward Titus Canyon. Before Titus we could check out Leadfield Ghost Town. After Titus Canyon there is Ubehebe Crater. Day three is a bit trickier because there is a lot to see and I’m not sure how much time it’s going to take to get through all of it and how much camping is allowed along that northern stretch. We may stay in Mesquite or we may have no problem getting to Eureka Sand Dunes.
The next day, day four, we will eventually make our way back around and then south to Warm Springs in Saline Valley where we will most likely stay to freshen up and rest up.
Day five will be Lippincott Pass, Racetrack Playa, Hidden Valley, we will most likely make camp at the base of hunter Mountain.
Day 6 will just be driving out but not before stopping in Cerro Gordo Ghost Town.
Of course all of this is tentative as things may not go as planned and we may have to improvise.
My hope and plan is that this is a no rush trip. If we don’t get to see everything then that’ll mean we will have to come back and I’m okay with that. I hope you all are as well.
Let me know if you have any suggestions or if I missed anything.
Thanks!
