Rally Point Details:

CANCELED - USAL BEACH instead

Agenda:

NOTE CHANGE OF SEQUENCE vs Original Plan

UPDATE - Backup Camp option due to air-quality concerns added

Friday August 27:

The convoy will be heading out 8am up HWY 108 and go to to the Leavitt Lake turn off, climb the trail and camp at Leavitt Lake up at 9500’. - Air quality at Leavitt Lake is the main concern - we will make the call to stay when we get there but be prepared that we may on short notice change and move a little further south for Fri night. Current back-up plan is the east side of Lake Cowley.

Saturday

The group will head back down and continue on 108 to Bridgeport, with an Gas option and on to Bishop. we will gas up regroup and tackle the mountain through Coyote Flats (southwest of Bishop) to Funnel Lake at 10,400’ where we camp.

Sunday the 29th

We plan on descending as a group so nobody gets left behind but rigs can hit the road home based on your timing. See the Tioga Pass comments below.

AirQuality / Weather

It definitely doesn't look like bright blue sky will be out :( but we have a few days to go and wind directions etc can change quickly
The attached may help https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/bishop/93514/air-quality-index/332048?plot=circle

Air quality at Leavitt Lake is the main concern, we will Monitor and adjust accordingly.

High Altitude

If you are sensitive to high altitudes be aware both of these lakes are up there, so good hydration is important.

Maps/Route:

There is a map on the rally point. If you have previously downloaded please download again so you do have the 8/25 version. Please download for have available for offline use during the trip.

  • Trail to Funnel Lake
    • This link quite useful, consume at you pleasure - https://www.geoforward.com/coyote-flat-funnel-lake-camping-4x4-trail-inyo-national-forest-california/
    • Video of Rocky Section - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUzalDgQV0U
    • Video by @emmanuelb from some (most challenging) sections - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxA_4vNhPj0
    • @MotoMikeCa PreScout Trip info 8/15 : Conditions were pretty Smokey coming down tioga but got better the further south we went. From mapped air down location to the lake it took us 2 hours on the dot with minimal stops and traffic, it will take us significantly longer with a larger group. Water crossing are about a foot or so, no problem for any vehicles there. The route is definitely rocky as talked about and you tube videos are accurate. The 3 wheel section talked about will test your vehicles articulation as well as the multiple rock cropping testing your undercarriage armor. Picking good lines and having good spotting will get everybody through. There were a handful of jeep JK & JL, couple 4 runners, a Tacoma and the VW touareg pictured, showing a pretty stock vehicle can make it. Even with the 37s I did manage to find a few rocks along the way to rub on but the power wagon isn’t exactly nimble in tight spots. We got a brief shower and some wind at times but bad. All in all it will be a great trip up with the group working as a team, looking for to it!!!
  • Weather can be chilly at this altitude please plan accordingly

CarPreparation / Needs:

Both Trails are in and out Trails.

The trail to funnel lake is rated on a scale of 3-4 out of 5, will take several hours on dirt. While mostly easy there are some serious sections that are at times a steep with loose footing and sections that are rocky and require high clearance and good tire placement. You might need a tug from time to time so don’t be bashful if you need any help a spotter or whatever. And you may leave some markings on your rig.

- HAM comms (min Handheld),
- Chase Lights, rear amber lights will keep the group safer on dusty trails.
- Off road tires and Spare Tire
- stock high clearance required and should be fine, definitely 4wd
- fluids checked
- Gas fill ups will be at Bridgeport and Bishop CA
