It seems every gas or gas price thread turns political and then gets shut down. Do the owners of OB not realize that overlanding depends heavily on fuel prices and those prices are heavily influenced by politics? Are people so thin-skinned that they have to be shielded from words that mighy upset them? It is possible to scroll right past a post you don’t agree with or not even open a thread, right? Oh yeah, I forgot we are striving for eutopia where everyone is always happy. I guess when gas reaches $15/gallon the three people left on OB won’t have to be monitored. Sorry if I offended anyone

Gas prices are a political topic so there's no avoiding it. If you start a conversation bitching about gas prices then you're going to get into the politics of oil and oil futures. If you start a conversation about what you can do locally because gas is expensive then you've given a new avenue for conversation, but in that case it's best to just not mention gas because of the aforementioned politics that will inevitably leech into the conversation.

Nobody wants this to end up like Facebook, twitter, or even Reddit. I don’t think the mods are trying to keep things “PC,” I just think they want a “clean place.”

There are plenty of other forums you can go to argue and get nowhere if you want.

The creator of OB has free speech just as much as you. But you’re on his platform. So that’s his right to filter out whatever he doesn’t want.

No such thing as a clean or safe space. At least not in the real world. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, the constant and unrelating push towards believing that narrative is abhorrent and has no basis in actual reality.
Well, in the real world, where I’ve met many people on the trail and from this forum - no one ever discusses politics. The problem with socmed and online forums is people are inclined to say things they wouldn’t otherwise say to someone in person.

There is at least one member that should be locked when he shits in a thread instead of locking the entire thread.

These things can be discussed civilly and people can learn from them, particularly those under the spell of mass media.

I'll start by saying that the overlanding community, as big as it is now, is a small fraction of the total driving population. And as awesome as OB is, if you're reading this forum, you are part of an even more exclusive segment. So anyone who comes here has a lot in common.

I read at least one thread on gas prices that made me scratch my head. IMO, it was intentionally and unnecessarily divisive. There are a lot of types of people who join OB, but we'd all take action to keep trails open, and all of us need a couple of nights outdoors every now and then. That's not true of most people. We should be conscious of the choice to divide vs form a community.

The other thing about online discussions - it's incredibly tempting to dive in on topics where we just aren't aware of the details. We think we know, but except for the OB members who are executives at oil companies or energy policy legislators, we're don't really know. (Imagine talking about your line of work at a party. Imagine the naive questions people ask you. Most people don't know other fields very well...)

Anyway, I look forward to your opinions on the merits of hi-lift vs bottle jacks. Or if we really want to throw down on an inflammatory thread, is there any point to aluminum skids?

Do the owners of OB not realize that overlanding depends heavily on fuel prices and those prices are heavily influenced by politics? OB is not a place for politics.

Are people so thin-skinned that they have to be shielded from words that mighy upset them? Do not know, does not apply.

It is possible to scroll right past a post you don’t agree with or not even open a thread, right? Not about agree or Don't, about the Community Guidelines and they will not change.

Oh yeah, I forgot we are striving for eutopia where everyone is always happy. If your not happy, that is on you.

I guess when gas reaches $15/gallon the three people left on OB won’t have to be monitored. Sorry if I offended anyone. Tons of people on OB who do not need BS and politics to be happy or talk about things, sorry if anyone has to have those things to talk about.... It will not be on OB.

Threads started with Bitching will be locked. Start a thread about what or what not you are doing, sounds good, if hijacked by politics or other nonsense, those people will be gone.

I’m growing very tired of ALL forums. They have become safe spaces for the politically correct and social justice warriors making sure no one is ever offended by anything or anyone. I started on dial-up bulletin board forums and I have to say I miss those days.
Do care if people are offended, but people do not follow the guidelines and we have an issue. Cant follow a simple thread without politics or criticizing someone or whatever, there is an issue.

Am doing that, in fact sent out final warnings...

But if a thread is loaded... Well it gets locked.
