I visited all 5 Nat’l Parks in Utah this year with the wife (via hotels) and decided I’m going back next May to Overland/Camp in remote locations.

Question: What are some good resources to use in planning without becoming overwhelmed?

I have GaiaGPS and just ordered a Utah Road and Recreation Atlas. While I wouldn’t mind camping a night or two in a NP, my main goal is to avoid crowds. I think I’ll probably be there 7 days and 7 nights. I’d like to confine my “plans” to areas between Moab and Zion.

Is it dumb to think about winging it and just go where the road leads?

I am interested in books, so any recommendations in that regard are welcome.

My fear is if I use common books or YouTube, when I arrive there will be a crowd!

If you want to see as few people as possible, get a backcountry permit for The Maze District in Canyonlands. I specifically recommend Maze Overlook and The Neck campsites.

As much as I want to spend lots of time in Canyonlands, we will be traveling with pets. As a result, we are restricted to Shafer Trail. Still gonna do that again, though:)

Goblin Valley is something I need to check out. Capital Reef, Moki Dugway, and Valley of the Gods are on the list as well.

I’m currently researching the trail between Comb Wash and Posey Trail. The map I just bought notes it as an “ATV” trail. However, there are videos of folks in what appear to be stock 4x4s driving it without much issue.

TIA for all the suggestions. I think at this point looking at the various maps and just coming up with a route that hits some highlights will work.
