I considered putting this in the Trail Section but I am posting it here since it deals more with our rigs than it does the actual trails. Does anyone go out and "practice" with their rig? This sounds silly to actually ask it but I am bringing it up in case there are some less than experienced (noob) persons out there that may not do this or feel some practice is in order.

I know that we use our rigs when we go out overlanding but does anyone actually go out to an OHV area and practice climbing and crawling over/around/through stuff to see what your rig can and cannot do? I do it when I go to Bridgeport north of Fort Worth to hang with my Jeep club. I consistently look for obstacles that will give me an idea of what I may encounter on the trail. I wouldn't want to get out in the middle of nowhere and get stuck because I had no experience with an obstacle. Also, I wouldn't want to turn around because I didn't think I could do an obstacle when I had a more than capable rig. I make it a point to get stuck and have to use my winch or to find what I cannot climb to see how my vehicle will react with the terrain that I am working in.

I welcome thoughts and opinions on the subject.

I definitely go out, I refer to it more as testing though. Generally after I put on a new upgrade that may alter things like break over angles or the tipping point if I raise the center of gravity, I like to go out to my local ORV park and test the new limits. It's also a good time to go out and have a little fun as my local area is pretty easy for jeeps (I can run 99% of the trails in 2wd) so it's a nice relaxing pace to teach friends how to handle situations if they're driving later on a trip.

I'm actually planning to go out this weekend and test my new traction boards. Looking forward to getting stuck then unstuck. The unstuck probably being more important.

It was a curiosity. I am glad that some do take the time to go out and test their rigs. I just got a set of mud terrains that I am going to try out both on road and off to see how they handle and how I like them.

I've never been to an OHV park. I just test my rig in the real world.

That said, if you have easy access to an OHV park it is very smart to test out your rig or modifications first. If you do have a failure, help will be nearby.

I have one reasonably close by. Less than an hour drive.
