Take a look at all the portable solar battery options out there. jackery etc. Those can be a great option for folks who want to use it away from the vehicle or just not have a permanent system. They support solar panels/blankets and kinda give you the battery, inverter, 12v dc outlets, 5v usb, battery charger from the alternator all in one.

Or you can jump down the rabbit whole of on vehicle systems. Everything from dual lead acid/agm in the engine bay with isolators or DCDC chargers, or battery boxes in the cab/bed, or more involved setups like LiFePo4 (Im doing that now).

Not a rabbit hole, unless one turns it into a rabbit hole. I’ve been using mine for over 8 years without failure. Nothing automatic with a manual switch to isolate or connect. 50 bucks for battery box, 25 for washer fluid relocation brackets, 50 bucks for the marine grade switch and maybe 10 bucks for wiring. I normally get 6 to 7 years outta the batteries.

Before you build it, take a hard look at what you actually need. For me, my second battery is mainly for my fridge and winch. What you need to figure out is how long are you sitting in one place. It takes 3 days to kill my main battery with everything hooked to it if I park in warm weather with my solar panel shaded. That's when I moved things to my winch battery(aux).
Remember what works for other people may not actually be best for you.
How much room do you have for a second battery and how much power with engine off do you actually need.
Can you run lead acid or AGM. Do you need Lithium or do you just want it.
You alternator powers everything when the vehicle is running, not your batteries.
If your going to be parked for long periods you want to add solar.

I run two mismatched AGM's, isolation solenoid, small solar panel (keeps battery's topped off when its sits at home).
What "I" don't need is Lithium's. That means I don't need expensive converters, everything is 12 volt so no inverter. I now have a 120 watt portable panel which keeps up with everything if I'm parked. In reality, I don't need a second battery. My winch will work on my main if I chose it. Lithium's also don't like the temperature range I tend to camp in.

My system is pretty much the same as @MOAK

Before I get any comments on how you "need" DC-DC chargers for AGM's, I have been running dual AGM's (3 in my old camper) for decades with no ill effect.

I have a agm battery . Right now mainly lighting ,stereo, DC converter, and power to the rear for a wench (or other ). Never really though about solar panel .

I definitely don't think I need Lithium batterys that overkill for what we do. I think the second battery would just allow more usage and or time out w/o starting or running the truck

I got an 05 and am planning a dual battery, I am going to follow what our founder did for his Cruiser, should work for us, here is a video he did on it:

Jim
PS do you have a build thread on what you did so far?
Thank you the video . No I do not have a build thread. I'll probably do one this spring
