Greetings all.

I don't have a Taco - yet - but am thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these 2...wondering if you all could give me some suggestions on what I specifically need to look for, Tacoma-wise, and which one you would choose?

The first one is a 2010 Tacoma AccessCab, TRDSport... https://www.boondoxmi.com/inventory/details/37410567

The second one is a 2009 Tacoma DoubleCab, TRD Sport... https://www.boondoxmi.com/inventory/details/37444124

I really like both trucks. I know neither needs to worry about timing BELTS, but what other issues (other than normal car stuff) should I be looking for?

Thanks so much!

I would say you REALLY need to look at the frame. Many years of Tacomas have a frame rust problem ( ) Both years are covered under the recall and Toyota should replace the frame if THEY decide it needs to be done. Being in MI make sure these are really clean. Get both up on a rack and inspect the whole frame.

@Boort is totally correct on the rust issue. Both those years fall into the frame recall. Unfortunately I don't think Toyota is doing anymore frame replacements. (Pretty sure there is an ongoing law suit over that part). But don't let it scare you away. Just ask them to put it on a lift, or check the vin# with Toyota. I have a double cab long bed and absolutely love it.

That was the most vivid example of the frame problem that I knew of. (sent to me by a Ford guy as a joke and poke a while back.) Plenty of these trucks are just fine. I drive a '97 Taco that has been very good to me.

I had the same recall on my 2000 Tundra several years back, but being a west coast rig it had no issues.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I decided to pass...can't afford new, and didn't like what seemed to be covered up rust on the frames (not just surface).

Need to find a west coast vehicle or dry area that will transport to their vehicle lot there...there are a few I've seen

Previous to my 2015 Taco I had a 2005 Taco. As for the frame rust issue, I did not have to worry about it... I always unload a couple cans of black spray paint on the underside of the truck before winter. Toyota issued inspection recalls on 2nd gens and if it failed inspection the frames were replaced. If you visit Tacomaworld.com there are more details about this subject. I would not let it sway your decision as they are great trucks and very dependable. I realized you passed on the 2 you were looking at but I have had an access cab and now have a double cab long bed. The double cab is great because it has more room. The bigger decision if you go wit ha TRD is choosing a TRD offroad or TRD Sport..... main difference being the push button locker vs limited slip rear diff. Be happy to answer any questions if you are still considering.....S
