Starting Local (Whatcom County Area)

Being relatively new to North Western Washington and having recently had a heart attack, I am trying to get back into camping and off-road 4x4 in a slow and safe manner. So, I am looking for some advice on local roads and trails to take that I can do to rebuild my skills and confidence and that are close enough to civilization that I can return to if things go south.
