Rubicon Crash

Scary. I have anxiety dreams about loosing brakes.

You guys do those burly med kits right? Those look handy. The case should keep them from getting mangled like all mine in the soft cases.

Lost their brakes?

It appears so but details are still unclear.

That's us. We initially started with soft cases but had very similar experiences. The defining moment came in Moab when we opened up a soft case and it was contaminated with red dirt! We haven't written off soft cases but if we re-introduce them... they will come with a waterproof zipper and be made out of water resistant material.

Cool. I will get something like that when I get closer to finishing my overlanding trailer project.

Dang. I'm running the trail in two weeks. Hope that doesn't happen to me. Surprised he wasn't able to use his gears or parking break to slow down.
Right? Manual or automatic, wouldn't your first reaction be to downshift and grab a fist full of e-brake? ah, 2nd guesses are always the best! Lots of panic going on there.

As far as downshifting goes, once you reach a certain speed, you have to choose the right gears or the planetaries won't mesh. Especially if it stalled.

I bet he was jamming the stick into first gear and failing the whole time.

I've heard the rangers that patrol the Rubicon are especially militant for required equipment, is that the case and is a functional brake not required? Moot point, gearing down never happened it seems.

Exactly what I thought. Even with an auto, you'd think you wouldn't get going that fast. Although, most manual transmissions on trucks like that regularly pop out of gear, so that could have happened...

When I swapped a 14 bolt in my k5 and did a disc brake swap it didn't get a ebrake. Lol going to adjust mine make sure it's tight.
Kudos to the cage maker though

I just wonder why he started down that hill without being in gear already. I would never start down something like that in neutral for this very reason. Use the brakes too much and you can overheat them or even boil the fluid.

Fortunately everyone walked away from this but there are a few questions that each one of us need to ask ourselves... How prepared am I when cut off from civilization, how maintained is my vehicle, and what is plan B through D?

Putting a bit of thought towards these generally makes for a more comfortable trip.
