You hear the chatter about thief’s stealing RTT’s, question 1, how big of a problem is this really? Has anyone here ever had their RTT stolen? I paid quite a bit for my Falcon and couldn’t afford to buy another one if mine were to get stolen. i contacted WEW to see about getting a set of their brackets to mount my Roofnest Falcon on a CBI Overland bed rack and I guess the CBI rack isn’t popular enough as WEW does not make a mount to fit it yet. What methods do you guys suggest to secure a RTT so that it less likely to disappear?
 
Did you check with your auto insurance to see if you could get extended coverage under the comprehensive and theft policy?
I would hit up my local ‘Fab’ shops for some custom brackets.
It will be interesting to see what others might have done / recommendations.

I have not checked with my insurance agent yet to see what my coverage options are. I have full coverage now for everything, I will have to see what adding the overlanding gear will do to my coverage.

I live in a rural farming community, there is no “local fab shop” lol that is why I am asking you guys what you recommend
 
I personally haven't heard of this happening to anyone, though that doesn't mean much. I am on some large overlanding groups on FB, plus these forums so I'd think if it were something worth worrying about we'd be hearing about it first-hand. I don't doubt theft has happened, but I suspect it's so uncommon it's not worth worrying about. Just my $0.02.

Before I got a set of WEW mounts I used a long cable lock threaded through the hinges and out of the cover of my soft shell RTT, then wrapped a few times around a crossbar and the car’s roof rails. I wouldn’t use it as much on trips, but more when the car would be sitting around in town, at work, etc.

Not sure how this would work with a Roofnest as it may not have access to the inside when closed to run the cable through, but maybe there are eyelets or something?

This is what I used. Long, thin, and flexible and the pin style head on the cable meant I could thread it through tight spaces in the tent frame and wrap it around things easily. Not the strongest lock out there but hopefully enough to deter a crime of opportunity, right?

It’s hard to steal, transport and offload a stolen RTT so that helps. I’ve read one or two stories of this happening on other continents. It’s very rare. If the RTT is staying on top - like permanently - weld the bolts. If it’s temp, then cable locks will slow them down.

for sure, it was just an example for OP, there are alot of other brands out there for much cheaper. If the thieves are coming with bolt cutters, they mean business and short of locking your RTT indoors, not much will stop em. Of course, they could always buy the key to these bolts too and then have zero issues removing the tent.
To OP, i have security/ tamper resistant nuts and have not had my RTT stolen. After reading this thread, I did check them and they do not look like they were messed with either.

As others have already said, I also think that the theft of a roof tent is a rather rare topic. I can be wrong and depending on where the vehicle is parked, it might look completely different. If it is to be specially secured, I think you have to protect the fastening somehow. Usually tents are fastened with two threaded rods, a profile and nuts, right? For this, somehow build a cover yourself? Or use the already mentioned lockable security nuts, which are available in different designs. Or - quite modern - there are also roof tent security systems on the market that are locked.

Although I personally don´t like locks on the outside of the vehicle to secure something. Because dirt, sand and moisture can easily get into locks. That´s a tricky mixture that can lead to clogging of the locks or even damage. And then nothing opens or only with difficulty. Taping the lock with duct tape could remedy this.
