Hey everyone, here is my review of the Rokform phone mounts and ProClips base.
I still believe that Ram mounts are the #1 mount and still use one on my bike. The problem I have with them is when it came to installing it in my truck, I could not find a single way to make a clean install for myself. So back to the interwebs rabbit hole I went. I was not finding anything to mu liking as I wanted something that has a mechanical grip/lock on the phone not just relying on magnets or a weak friction grip. On the recommendation of a friend that uses it on his bike I checked out Rokform. After browsing their site I decided to give it a try.
Their cases are limited to basically Samsung s8/newer or Iphones. Then while browsing I found the Universal adapter kit. This allowed me to use my current case that I like with any major work, just stick it on and go. The nice thing about the adapter is that there is the Rokform mounting system as well as a magnet for options.
Now was on to the second problem, mounting the base in the truck. After days of trying to figure out were to stick the base in the truck with nothing looking good, and making me think this was a mistake, I went back to mother interwebs for help. While searching for phone mounts in Ram trucks on google images I came across ProClips. Again I was not impressed with the cradle style phone mount but noticed they sold the vehicle specific base separate.
This gave me the decision to Frankenstein a mount together that would not only keep up with my ram mount but look better when a phone not mounted.
The ProClip mounts extremely easy and uses a combination of friction and double sided 3m tape. Once the ProClip base was installed it was onto installing the Rokform base onto the ProClip. One tip for any one looking to do this, The cross on the mount will not be straight with the phone, I would suggest clipping the Rokform base onto your phone and using your phone to gauge were/ how to mount it. Learn from my mistake it was much easier and straighter the second time around. I also added 2 screws attaching the Rokform to the ProClip just for added security and not to rely on just 3m double sided tape ( these screws are not provided in the mount kit) .
Now onto the review of these products.
The ProClip base mounted extremely easy. This base seems to be built very well and strong. I am not the biggest fan of vent mount systems since they typically mount to the vent itself and tends to block the air flow of the vent. This is were the ProClip base makes a difference. The base mounts to the dash around the vent and not the vent itself, with doing this it is stronger mounting and also is raised as to allow air to still flow relatively well (although it will block air flow direction). The main reason I went with this base was just the simple fact of the clean install.
The Rokform mount has been fantastic. I have come to like it more than my ram mount for day to day life. This mount does have a pretty decent learning curve to get used to, but after a while it has turned into muscle memory and I do not have to think about it. There are three major advantages I have noticed with this mount over the ram mount.
1) One handed use to put your phone on and off the mount.
2) The ease of switching phone from portrait to landscape mounting.
3) Since there is no grips on the side like the ram mount xgrip (the one i have) your buttons on the side of the phone are never covered. I do not use them often but when you need to the ram mount can be frustrating to get lined up correctly to not block them.
Over all I am extremely happy with the set up. It holds strong and in my opinion looks better then the ram mount and performs pretty comparably. The other great part of this install is there were no screws or holes placed into the vehicle itself so if you decide to change it there is no permanent damage/marks from the install.
Thanks for reading my first review on the forum. Sorry if it is a but wordy lol.
