I didn't watch the video in the original post, but one method I've used when sinking in mud under a puddle almost up to my frame rails, was to D-ring my recovery strap around a tree and wrap the other end around my front tire... it reeled itself in and walked the truck right out of the puddle.

To any who attempt this, be aware that it does strain the wheel hub, and KEEP THE WHEEL DIRECTLY IN LINE WITH THE STRAP. I travel very lightly next to the majority here, so I wasn't concerned for my hub. And if you have an open front diff, you'll want to put the strap on the side that receives the most torque (on mine, this is always the left).

Traction mats or traction boards are designed for just these scenarios, but my superior intelligence decided not to have any with me.
